I have bought a 160 GB segate baracuda harddisk and attached to it, formatted. But machine shows 149.05 GB in place of 160 GB. Whether it is hard disk fault?. And all drives were partioned in NTFS.

is this hard drive new ?
you could run the chkdsk utility
click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to recovery any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive there are many ways of running the chkdsk utility

click start right click on my computer you should see your drive usually C: select properties click tools check now tick both boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery on any bad sectors or you could tick one box and wait until its finished then return and tick the other box
then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart

do not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage your computer
then defragment your hard

once all is finished right click on your hard drive select properties you will see the ammount of space used and free space

hope this helps you

What's your problem?I have bought a 160 GB segate baracuda harddisk and attached to it, formatted. But machine shows 149.05 GB in place of 160 GB. Whether it is hard disk fault? and all drives partion...

To say it simply: That's totally OK.

The manufacturer is using the BINARY total AND the system is by formatting it, also using a small portion of it. It's the difference between GB and GiB

Check it yourself with an USB memory stick, you KNOW the max capacity, but what is available after formatting (empty stick)? Less!

Hard Drive Capacity Stuck at 33.8 GB

You are probably using FAT32 for your partition on your drive: the limit for FAT32 is 32GB. Alternatively, you are using NTFS but your partition has been limited to that particular size.

You could you a Disk partition manager to change the format of your partition to NTFS or if you are already using this format extend the partion size to your requirements.

A safer alternative, if your current partition is set smaller than your drive size is to create additional primary or secondary partitions to fully utilize the available capacity: you could use (with great caution and only if you are experience) standard Windows Control Panel -> Systems and Security -> Admistrative Tools -> Computer management -> Disk management

What to do with unreadable but recognised hard disk segate 400GB

Your Windows Xp bootable CD should have an option called "Format his file system using FAT32" while installing the OS. Use the option to format it. The only prob is that it creates only a single partiotion. After installing windows you can re-partition using a third party software such as Partition Magic(please note that it will not affect your windows installation as you can first re-size the windows drive to a lower capacity and then partition the un-allocated space.
