My KN-COPP-B unit displays "Err" as well. The manual states that either the sensor has failed or the unit has been operation for seven years. In the case of my unit that failed today, the unit has been in service since Nov 2001 - so seven years has past. I will replace the unit with the same model since I am happy with its performance and value.

The Error message (Err) keeps pooping up on my carbon monoxide detector, even though the batteries are brand new. I have the KN-COPP-B model, and it was manufactured in June 2001.

Maybe the detector is getting too old to work properly?
Should I buy a new one? Or try to get this one working again?

Sorry for the typo... I meant to say popping up (not pooping). Typed my question too fast!

Same problem, and it's irritating that it keeps doing it at 2:30 and 3:30 a.m.!

My night hawk carbon monoxide reads L6. Then Err.

Lb (rather than L6) indicates a low battery. You need to replace the 9V battery in the carbon monoxide detector. The Err suggests an internal error but could just be due to the low battery.

If the Err persists after you replace the battery, press the peak level button (the right hand button) and check for an additional error code. If the Err message continues, replace the Night Hawk unit. If the unit is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer. Most of these units have a 10 year warranty. There are several models available from Kidde. The manual is available on the product site. For the KN-COPP-3 Night Hawk carbon monoxide detector, the documentation is available here: http://www.kidde.com/home-safety/en/us/products/fire-safety/co-alarms/kn-copp-3/ . Click on the Documents tab. The manual for the KN-COPP-3 999-0100 is here: http://www.utcccs-cdn.com/hvac/docs/2001/Public/06/User_Guide_KN-COPP-3_900-0100.pdf .

I hope this helps.

What does err mean on carbon monoixide dectectors

Is it about 7 years old? The chemistry of the sensor is only good for 7 years, so by regulation they are required to have a timer that makes them die at 7 years, after which they are no longer accurate and could mislead you into a fatal CO poisoning. I presume you've already tried replacing the battery.

My unit keeps chirping every 30 seconds even after replacing the batteries. The unit is over 5 years old.

The manufacturer has written this in their manual for your unit...

"Err" displayed -battery icon may show any state of battery capacity. One quick beep every 30 seconds. Unit is Error condition

Replace batteries. If "Err" (or blank display) continues, unit has malfunctioned. Replace immediately.

My Kidde "Nighthawk" carbon monoxide

Sounds like you may be due a warranty replacement. Call the Kidde "Hotline" at 1-800-880-6788 with your Model number, serial number, and manufacturing date. The original sales receipt would be helpful but probably not absolutely necessary. Good luck. *Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, despite the handle. Detector shows 888 when first switched on then 0 then err with bleep

Showing 888 for a second is normal, it is a display test.
But Err means the unit is faulty or end of life (around 7 years), it can't be repaired so it should be disposed of and a new one bought.

Detector beeped and showed "ERR" and low battery.

If the display shows "Err", push and hold the Peak Level button. Does the display change to "E09"? If so, then you have just been "had" by the grossly under-documented "planned obsolescence feature" called, rather matter-of-factly, "End of Life". This means that ~7 years after first being powered up, the unit will, BY DESIGN, cease to function, forcing you to buy a replacement. Would have been nice of Kidde to include THAT warning on the OUTSIDE of the package. Call their "Hotline" at 1-800-880-6788 and tell them what you think of that policy. If it is still under warranty (5 or 7 years depending on date of manufacture) they should replace it. In any event, buy another one; if they replace your first one you will have twice the protection. Not a bad thing. *Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, despite the handle. Words to live by: "Every creative act results from a sudden cessation of stupidity." -Edwin H. Nighthawk carbon monoxide alarm model number KN-COPP-3 err beeping every 25-30 seconds, I replaced battery they still beep. They say to seek users guide, which can't be found. It seems to have started...

1. Change batteries.
2. Clean it.
3. Swap it with another location if you can.

If it still does not work properly consult the local fire dept. for free.

You may have to take it in repairs if all fails.

We have Nighthawk Carbon Monoxide Alarm E151646 model # KN-COPP 3. It showed 'err' the other night. What does that mean.
