If you can get into `Menu' or `Setup' on the remote, you should be able to select things like 4 x 3, or widescreen etc.
Make sure the correct system is selected ie: PAL, NTSC, SECAM
There is more than one kind of PAL and SECAM to chose.
There may be a manufacturers default in the menu.
If the screen goes completely haywire when using the setup, then keep pressing the same button until it becomes legible again. Because this can happen keep a mental note as you press a key, so you can press it again.
