Question about Epson Stylus Photo R220 InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Both Ink & Paper lights flashing!

Clear out of the blue, when I went to turn on my Epson R220, the power light comes on for a few seconds, the printhead moves around a bit and then the power light goes out and the ink and paper lights flash together. I have bought new cartridges and they are doing the same thing. I have run the Epson Interactive Troubleshooter and followed all the steps. I have checked for paper jams (little pieces too) and I cannot seem to overcome this problem. Any help would sure be appreciated! Thanks.

Re: Both Ink & Paper lights flashing!

Hi JayBirde Do the lights flash Together (not alternate) and is it a quick flash (0.1 second on 0.1 second off)? If so, check the Status Monitor for a message. If it says Fatal Error or General Error, then you have a task on your hands! If the lights flash alternate (0.5 second on 0.5 second off) then this indicates a maintenence error and the status monitor should say parts inside your printer have reached the end of their life - or something similar. This much easier to fix with an R220 Rescue Kit from - use their search to look for R220 Rescue. If you can't find it, just drop them a line and they will create one for you. Delivery is via instant download so no waiting around to get your machine fixed. If you have a general or Fatal error it means the printers head can not move using the norm,al amount of force - i.e. something is in the way. You can check a few things: Ensure their is nothing in the path of the print head - paper, foam from the pad, head lock not retracting, toy soldier on manouvers in the mechanism etc Chech the encoder strip ( a grey-ish looking plastic strip, near the drive belt for the print head) is clean and attached. Check the lid for the ink cart cover is full closed.

Two lights not power light flashing intermitantly

If you mean the ink and the paper lights are flashing at different times (ie: paper on, ink off... then paper off, ink on) then your printer is telling you it needs a service.

Rather than reinvent the wheel, here's an article on the whole thing:

You can find more information on your particular printer here too:

Both ink and paper lights are flashing, printer will not print, installed new ink cartridges for all colors.

the waste ink tank beneath the printer is full. it will cost more to fix this than a new printer. take a look at the Epson NX and Workforce series and get yourself a good printer with a year fedex replacement warranty.

I need to clear the inkjet heads on my Epson Stylus R220.

Follow the steps below to clean the print head using the Head Cleaning utility.
Make sure that the printer is turned on and the ink out light is off. Access the printer software. Click the Maintenance tab, then click the Head Cleaning button. Follow the on-screen instructions. The power light flashes while the printer performs the cleaning cycle. Never turn off the printer while the power light is flashing. Doing so may damage the printer. When the power light stops flashing, load a few sheets of paper and click Print Nozzle Check Pattern in the Head Cleaning dialog box to confirm that the print head is clean.

what type of light? ink light or paper light?
if its on ink light it means one or more of the inks is empty, if its the paper light means paper is jammed.
try to turn off/on the printer then load again paper.

The printer may have an internal error or a hardware issue already.
Ink pads full usually indicates if all lights are flashing and an error msg would pop up in your computer screen "parts inside..."

Here's what you may want to try.
Just turn off the printer.
Checked for obstructions or any foreign objects inside the printer.
Try to check from inside the printer where the ink cart holder is, from where you load the paper and from where the paper comes out.

I just today threw away my R220. If your 2 red lights are going and the power light is off, then your printer has died. It just happened to me. It sucks, but there is no way to fix it.

This seems like you have two separate errors.

For the loss of ink problem, see my previous posts about under head cleaning. This should get you going again, but if not, there is another known issue which causes these machines to stoip printing. This problem stems from a manufacturing "feature" which results in a broken pipe. To get a fix for this you should contact and ask about there countermeasure for loss of ink in the Photo R series

The second error with the flashing lights depends on the sequence in which they flash. If the power light is off and the Ink and Paper lights flash half second on and half second off but alternating, then you have a maintenance request. This is easy to sort with yet another kit from The Service Manual Shop (R220 rescue kit)

If the sequence is Power light off but ink and paper flashing simultaneously then you have a fatal error. These are somewhat harder to attempt to fix and may require specialist knowledge and big parts that put the machine beyond economical repair.

Having said that, it can be worth taking the machine apart and removing the ASF assembly then reassembling as sometimes the feed mechanism ties itself in a knot and throws up a scary error.

Hope this helps a little
