I don't have good news for you. Coloured vertical lines is a symptom of terminal failure of LCD screens. Most common in laptops, monitors, and TVs. Problem only gets worse with time with more lines appearing, then expanding to cover a whole side of the screen. 30 - 50% normally.

The lines indicate a slow failure of the LCD and it is progressive. The system can be connected to a VGA monitor and you can select the External display using Fn + F8 key combination.

Replace the screen, they're not repairable.

Your laptop screen has been faulty. you can checked it from service center.

This is either an issue with your LCD video cable or your LCD screen 99% of the time. The best way to test this is to hookup to 2nd monitor and see how the image looks. If there are no defects then it is an LCD or cable issue. If you have graphic issues on the 2nd monitor then it is your motherboard.

I would recommend (assuming it is the cable/LCD) reseat the LCD video cable inside the laptop and then try to wiggle it around to see if you can make the lines get better or worse. Assuming playing with the cable does not effect the problems on your LCD Then I would say you need a new screen.

normally the 19" resolution can support up to 1280*1024, but if it comes with vertical lines in full screen, it might indicate the panel is no longer to work and probably it's time to replace new one.

They aren't hard to replace. If you can find one on eBay, get it and use the on-line manuals from Dell's web site. They are very clear and easy to follow.

Sound like the cable was lose connection between LCD panel and mother board. I fixed this problem before for this Dell module.

Try connecting an external monitor to the Dell Inspiron 9300 and see if the vertical line is also present on the monitor. If the monitor display is fine, then your laptop’s LCD display panel is defective. If the monitor also displays the vertical line, then your problem is with either the video card or motherboard located inside your laptop.
Not sure if the Compaq Presario has an external monitor plug, but if it does the above procedure can be applied to that one as well.
