Question about Washing Machines

2 Answers

Thank you for your advice. I have a kenmore he2 plus washer

And, the drain motor works-pushes water out of the hose. the machine is empty of water, blew out with air gun but STILL comes back with a f21 error.

I am confused. there is NO draining occuring because the drain area is empty. I emptied the filter-full of ****- took the hose off the drain and blew the line clear, put it back together, still the same issue.

the pump blades seem to have some play side to side and in and out on the shaft. I don't know how tight this impeller is supposed to be, could this be the issue?

is there a sensor in the drum area giving a false reading? is the ccu bad?

help!

thank you so much for the prompt reply. I am resetting the ccu right now. the pump is actually moving water. filled the tub with a gallon or so, (an inch and a half of water visible.), the tub drains just fine.

blew out the drain line side and the inlet side back into the tub, those are clear and I can hear the water flowing through the pump and out the drain.

just be clear, if the pump IS moving water, then it is ok?

will let you know on the reset try.

well, I just tried it again, after unplugging for an hour. the F21 code came back on. the system is completely empty of water. I took off the drain and made sure. before and during the initial startup and running of th e pump.

do you know if there is a sensor indicating water level in the system? how would I check it?

  • washersean Nov 12, 2008

Well, I truly appreciate the help. And, you are helping to narrow down the issue. So, the pressure switch, under light pressure, clicks twice, I am thinking two fill level indicators. from the whirlpool manual, the tests for the switch are as follows:
The meter should indicate 0 ω for each
measurement while the diaphragm is activated.
    Water Level Setting Test Points
    Empty Pins 4 and 6
Suds Detect Pins 1 and 2
    L1 Pins 4 and 5
    Overflow Pins 3 and 4
    website for whirlpool duet manual.
    https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/Sr...$FILE/8178558.pdf

impedance for the motor is approx 12.3 ohms.

did these tests, put it back together, still f21, jerked it around to get the back panel off and, lo and behold! the ASDF@#@#$@#$ thing started working.

I suspect it was hung with the cycle interrupted and jostling it reset the damn thing!

I am having the same problem except when i unplug it for awhile it will drain very good, but the next drain i get the error f21. I've cleared all lines. I am guessing i probably need a new pump? I bought it a year ago in march so i have no warrenty. where would i be able to get a pump for it? thank you in advance for your help.

Try unplugging the washer for at least 30 minutes to reset the CCU. In some cases this will clear any minor glitches that can be generating erroneous error codes. If it does not clear, you more than likely have a component failure.

Now...it does not take much to damage these drain pumps. If anything has been left in the pump reservoir for a significant period of time, the drain pump motor and/or impeller may have been damaged. The result: a drain pump that "appears" to be running, but may not actually be pumping anything. I would recommend replacing the pump if it is not draining any longer.

Another thing to try before we assume the pump is dead is to check the drain line that runs from the bottom of the wash tub to the inlet side of the pump. I have found small items such as socks and wash cloths that have managed to work their way into this hose and clog the line. If you have already checked this area, then proceed with a pump replacement.

Although a CCU could possibly cause erroneous error codes, the likelihood that it is causing this error is not common. I doubt that you have a CCU problem, and it is a more expensive option than the drain pump.

I hope this answers your questions. Let me know if you require further assistance.

If the pump is moving water as it should, then you may assume that it is good. Another thing I forgot to mention that can cause drain issues is a condition known as "siphoning". The following link explains:

    http://www.fixya.com/support/r587481-pre...

Although the majority of the cases involve a washer that will NOT maintain a sufficient water level, this can also cause problems with drainage. Something you may consider. Just double check the installation and placement of your drain hose in the standpipe.

The pressure switch senses the level at which the water should be. If the pressure switch were defective, however, the washer would probably overfill. There is also a flowmeter on some of these front loaders that detect the flow rate of the water coming IN to the wash tub, not draining. If the flowmeter were bad it would cause problems at the beginning of the wash cycle and generate an error code. The CCU usually has a solenoid (or switch) that controls the drain pump. The board also senses the rate at which the water is being drained. I'm not sure what the time interval should be on your washer, but if the CCU does not detect a drain within a specified time this will cause an error code to be generated. It does not make sense to me, however, if the pump is draining properly as you stated. Unless...the pump motor is damaged and is spinning too slowly. But...you indicated that the washer drained just fine. If you remove the lower panel under the door, there should be a tech sheet inside the washer along the cabinet interior wall somewhere. This tech sheet may offer more specific guidance on how to remedy this problem and offer schematics which I do not have. I apologize in advance for not providing you with a more direct answer than I have. It is can be difficult at times to diagnose a problem without the technical data in front of me.

Oops I lied. I do have the tech sheet for the HE2. According to what I read under the "F21" error it states that if the drain time exceeds 8 minutes, that water valves will turn off and the error code will be displayed. This is almost verbatim. The recommended procedures state that if you have attempted to unplug the washer to reset the computer and/or have verified and cleared the drainage system, and the error code STILL persists, they recommend replacing the pump. I hope this gives you a little more guidance. The pump may be running, but it may not be draining fast enough. That's the best explanantion I can give you.

I don't know...some problems go without explanation. I would still monitor it over time to see if the error code persists. Hopefully, it was just a momentary thing like you suggest.

    Props to washersean!

I came back home from hunting and the wife said the clothes washer was broken! well, off to the web I go. We have a Kenmore HE2 front loader that is probably about 5 years old. The washer would not fill with water. I did the following:
    1. checked the drain plug; made sure nothing was blocking the water pump
    2. check water pump
    3. checked all water hoses for objects
    4. checked hot and cold water taps - make sure I was even getting water
    5. checked the valves at where the taps go into
6 checked pressure switch (blew into the hose, unplug and check connections)

after about 2 hours of troubleshooting - still nothing!

    then I did:
did these tests, put it back together, still f21, jerked it around to get the back panel off and, lo and behold! the ASDF@#@#$@#$ thing started working.

Yep..I took off the pressure switch, tapped it a few times on the washer, re-installed and low and behold the washer started filling with water!

Washersean - you saved me $500 bucks! that's the quote they gave me!

    Thank you so much!

My washer stops &and F-20 appears on viewer. Whats wrong with my washer

water problem check screens in hoses and valves !! rrors F1, F11 and F20
  • Error F1 indicates a communication error between the computer and the washer. Unplug the washer for a minute and plug it back in, as this may correct the problem. Error F11 indicates a motor control error. It can be caused by improper voltage. Unplug the washer and check the connections. This may fix the problem. Error F20 indicates lack of water entering the machine. If there is no water in the washer, check that the water valves are turned on. If there is water in the washer, press "Stop" twice to drain the washer. Unplug the machine and check the hose connections.

The washer drum wont spin.

If your washer does not drain you need to check this parts.
  1. Inspect the drain hose for kinks
  2. Test the timer control
  3. Test the lid switch(some models)
  4. Inspect the water pump
  5. Inspect the drive belt(belt drive only)
  6. Inspect the motor coupler

My kenmore front load he2 plus wont drain.

HI, check the following to address this issue.

1. Clogged drain line or water pump
Check to see if there's something stuck inside the pump or the drain hose connected to the pump (pump is usually located at the bottom and towards the back of the washing machine).

2. Water Pump
If the drain line isn't clogged, you may have a problem with the water pump such as a frozen pulley or a broken impeller. If that's the case replace the water pump. Note: if you have a belt driven washer, check the belt(s) for cracks, as this would be a perfect time to replace the belt(s) if needed.

**The most common issue will be an obstructed hose or, line

Not filling to wash

The drain hose is very long. Check to make sure it is not pushed too far down into to drain in wall. If so pull it out as to prevent washer for syphoning water.
