Go into the setup menu and turn off closed captioning there, or just restore the factory presets. I believe this model has a menu button on the front of the tv.

You didn't ask for it, but here's a link to the user manual, in case you need it.

Closed caption won't turn off on Zenith B25A24W

Most cable or sat boxes have this option also---check there if you have not done so.

A few sets will default the CC when volume is off or way down also.

If the captions are turned off on your TV, they have to be coming from your cable box. The TV is just displaying what it's getting. Check your cable box menu and make sure captions are turned off there. Cable boxes, especially on digital systems, can prevent the TV's caption decoder from operating properly. So they need to be able to provide captioning, and I suspect you've turned it on somehow. Comcast should be able to tell you how to turn off captions if you can't figure out the menus.

My tv is an Emerson 20" HDTV. Last week the closed caption just popped on and we can't get it off. My cable company, Comcast, said my box is not equiped to support closed caption so it is the tv....

I think Comcast doesn't know much about their equipment; their box has no influence on CC since it is embedded in the program material and is passed through their receiver to your set. There are two possibilities; the remote is no longer sending the pulse train to control CC or the set's receiver isn't responding to that command.
You can do a rough check on your remote if you own any kind of digital camera; still or video. Turn on the camera so that you have a display picture of the room you are in. Point the remote toward the camera's lens and push (and hold) a button on the remote that you know is working, such as the "Power" button while looking at the LCD display of the camera. You should be able to easily see the blinking of the InfraRed LED(s) which most all digital cameras can 'see.' Once you know what to look for, try the button that should control the Closed Caption function. If you don't see anything on your camera LCD display, that button (or the circuit it controls) isn't sending out the code train required to control that function. If that is the case, you may be able to buy an original ('universal' remotes really aren't) replacement remote from:
Remotes.com
Conversely, if you DO see the remote blinking, then the circuit in the TV set that responds to the CC (and others) command has partly failed and that is more costly to repair.

WE HAVE A BLACK BOX IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR TV AND CAN'T GET IT OFF WITH THE REMOTE

Black boxes in the middle of the screen are text boxes. Text is a part of the closed captioning feature either on your television or your cable/set top box. You would press the closed captioning button on the remote repeatedly until it displays cc off or something similar. Captioning might also be active on your cable box/set top box. There is normally a hidden menu on the cable box and that is where closed captioning is. You have to turn the cable box off. Yes I did say turn the cable box off. Then press the menu button on it and then the hidden menu will pop up. Then navigate to closed captioning and choose disable.

There is a large black rectangle in the middle of the screen. It goes away for a second when I press the EXIT button on the remote and for about 4 seconds when I press the RECALL button on the remote. ...

This is a text box. This can be turned off under the closed captioning. There should be a cc button on your remote or the closed captioning features can be accessed from your television's menu. Turn closed captioning completely off to get rid of these text boxes.

Keep in mind that closed captioning can also come from your cable box or satellite receiver as well.

Dark shaded square area in center of tv picture - how do I get rid of it? I am at mothers and she has what looks like a 36 inch tabletop JVC tube tv probably about 10 plus years old. not able to remove tv...

I have heard complaints from some of my customers, “There is a black/gray box on my television, but I can still see the picture around the edges”. This happens to all of us and is a common symptom and can be fixed very easily. If you have a black/grey box in the picture, on the older sets they would be perfectly centered on the screen, but, on some of the newer sets the black/grey box can be in different places and can be different sizes on different sets.
Most likely the Text mode is on in the Closed Caption menu.
The way you can test if it is in Closed Caption Text mode, when you change the channels, the black/ gray box will not appear right away but it will take some time to show back up. This is a very good indication that the Closed Caption “Text” mode is turned on for your television. It just needs to be turned off.
To turn off the closed caption go into your menu and turn off closed caption (CC). This will vary from manufacture to manufacture; it should be in the options menu.
I have seen on some sets like Mitsubishi puts it under the Video adjustments button. So you may have to look around for it.
You may even have a CC button on your remote, which will make it much easier. Just press the CC button until the display indicates that CC it is off.
I hope that this tip helps you and that you enjoy your televisions for years to come.

Close caption turns on and off by itself problem

Check the cable box to make sure the captions aren't truned on in the cable box.

If not -if it really is the Magnavox caption service- then -

This is assuming you have the original remote:
1 Press MENU to show the on-screen
menu.
2 Press VOL+ or VOL- until SET is highlighted.
3 Press CH+ or CH- repeatedly to
highlight CLOSED CAPTION.
4 Press VOL+ or VOL-
to display the
CLOSED CAPTION menu.
5 Press CH+ or CH- to select the
closed caption you want (OFF, CC-1,
CC-2, or CC-MUTE).
CC-MUTE sets
the TV to show closed captions when
you press MUTE. The TV volume will be
disabled until you press MUTE again to
restore the sound.
6 Press VOL+ or VOL-
to confirm your
selection.
7 Press TV/AV/EXIT to remove the
menu.

Closed caption activiting on everytime tv is turned on

If you have the Suddenlink remote and the DVR box you can turn captions on or off by accessing a technical menu. To do this, press POWER and Menu buttons together (menu 2 times) to bring up a special menu. Select Closed Captions. On the popup menu select closed captions and using Select button change to OFF or ON as you wish. The trick is to get the menu to come up. Timing of pressing the two buttons is frustrating and it may take a few times befotre you get the special menu.
