Kenmore Washer makes noise at start of the Spin Cycle
I have a KENMORE automatic washer – Model Number:110.92291100. It is a 15 year old
machine. It has been fixed twice for
the same problem – replacement of motor coupling assembly. The first time, we had an applicance
repairman fix it.The 2nd
time about two years ago (2006), I replaced the motor coupling assembly.
Now, I have a problem with the Washer.
start of the SPIN Cycle, the washer makes a loud noise. But sevreral seconds (less than 10
seconds), when the tub is spinning faster, the noise goes away, and the
tub spins fine.
end of the SPIN Cycle, when the tub is slowing down, the washer makes the
same type of noise until the tub stops.
noise sounds metallic in nature.
Here is the troubleshooting results that I have found and
disassembled the washer, and checked the motor coupling assembly. Both the rubber disk and the 2 plastic
disks look good.Very little wear
and tear.I checked this area
first, because in year 2006, I had to replace this assembly.
the washer, there was some “black” dust, which made me suspect that the
motor coupling assembly in the first place.
I had access to the suspension plate, I replaced all 3 suspension pads and
all 3 plate pads.
suspension springs and the counterweight spring are in good condition.
reassemble the washer, and tested it with and without a laundry load, and
the same problem (making noise at the start of the spin cycle) still
washing machine works fine (except for the SPIN Cycle issue). .
researching the Internet for Troubleshooting tips, I found some problem
cases that suggest that the problem may be with either the Gearcase or the
Brake and drive (spin) tube assemblies.
reviewing the washing diagrams from my DIY manual and from a website, I
felt that I can remove and replace both parts,if needed. However,
the cost of either part is 1/3 the cost of new washing machine, so I
wanted to make sure that I could reliably find the root cause(s).
continued to research more articles on the Internet, I found a test case
that suggested that “Basket Drive Block” may be problem.
last night, I tried an experiment as suggested on the web site.I left the lid open, and bypass the
safety spin switch with a screwdriver, and started the SPIN CYCLE(with no laundry load or no water in the tub).
noise came up at the start of the spin cycle and then disappeared when the tub
basket was at full spin.
then, pushed down on the agitator cap while the tub was fully spinning, and
the same NOISE came back. When I
took my hand off the agitator, the noise went away.
remove the agitator to see if I could see anything unusual, but there was
hoping that the problem is with the Basket Drive block, because of the
small cost to replace it.
what I have written, can you advise me what needs to be done.I know the steps to remove the tub to remove
and replace any of the above items. How
can I test the gearcase or the spin tube assemblies, when I remove it?Also, is there a repair kit for the gearcase

Kenmore front loader. stopped at rinse. First ck to see if you washer works at different settings if so its very possible its your timmer or what called the wig wag or solonoid this switches the machine to spin & rinse. A basic service call should resolve your problem.
sounds like the lower bearing on the trans mission shaft is seizing up on you. had a frigedair that did the same thing. i took it apart to replace, but could not buy separate. it only came with a purchase of a new transmission, which ran $175- 275. so i junked it out. washer was only 5 years old.
This washer is JUNK!!!!!! We have the same washer (2 1/2 years old) and same problem. Tried to replace the bearing myself, no luck. So I called a repair man to come out and look at it. As soon as i told him the model number, they would'nt even come out. Very common problem for this washer. We are on our way to Sears to purchase a Kenmore.....GOOD LUCK
I have a kenmore front load washer, model: 417 42042100 It makes loud noise and becomes louder during the spin cycle. The drum is loose when I inspected through the front door. My problem is how to open the cabinet and replace any broken parts.
