I can get at the wheel axle, just can't see how to remove it to put a new wheel on.
I have unplugged the unit and will not be touching electrical contacts.

  • gcjones2 Nov 10, 2008

The roller is not accessible from within the refrigerator. Why woul I remove all of the trays?

  • gcjones2 Nov 10, 2008

    Great.

If that is true, I suppose I should learn to move it on three wheels.

    Thanks for trying.

  • gcjones2 Nov 10, 2008

Would this solution mean that I need to lay the unit down on its side to work on the bottom?
I can do that, but wouldn't want to if the likelihood of success is low.
Any guess on the chance that the axle assembly is riveted rather than bolted?

  • gcjones2 Nov 10, 2008

    OK, Irish Druid.

I think that I will tip it, and try to find the fittings.

If it is bolt or screw, I will lay it on down and replace both wheels.

For some odd reason the replacement wheels are solid hard rubber, but it originally came with flimsy hollow plastic casters, one of which broke in half the first time I rolled the unti out to clean behind it.

The cause of the break was apparently the stress of rolling over the 1/16" seam between floor tiles.

Give me a break - Whirlpool should be ashamed.

Thank you for your patience and I will update you so the answer to this question can go on file.

  • gcjones2 Nov 10, 2008

Sorry, but I don't see the rear rollers on any of these diagrams.

  • gcjones2 Nov 10, 2008

Although no Whirlpool diagram that I could find showed this, the rear wheel axle can be removed as follows.

    1. Remove the small hex head sheet metal screws that hold the cardboard dust cover in place.

    2. Remove the 1/2" heavy hex head screw that holds the cabinet to the base at the bottom rear corner.

    3. Tilt the entire unit over at 45 degrees propped up by a large soft sofa or chair.

    4. Using a large flat blade screwdriver, gently pry the base away from the cabinet about an inch. This will allow removal of the wheel axle and replacement of the crappy plastic caster with the higher quality hard rubber replacement wheel.

    5. Reassemble and replace the opposite side crappy plastic caster since it is bound to break sooner or later.

Hi,

To my understanding, the wheel (roller) is riveted to the bracket, but the bracket is screwed to the body.

Locate and remove the 2 screws that secure the console to the cabinet (usually located in the rear corners). Tilt the console backwards. Remove the 2 gold clips, and disconnect the lid switch wiring harness. Tilt the entire cabinet forward, and off of the base. The lid switch can now be accessed, from inside the cabinet

You may have to undo the back / lower panel. However, i wouldnt recommend playing with the fridge as there are large currents involved. Best left to a repairman.

You may have to change the whole wheel assembly, meaning from where it is bolted down or riveted..

  • Swilin Sampson
    Swilin Sampson Nov 10, 2008

Well, you could lean the fridge against a wall to access the wheel
area. (Make sure you remove everything from the fridge first! )

Look at the screw/bolt heads..If you find the regular hexagonal bolt,
or a screw groove, then it is not riveted. If you see it is just a flat
head, then it is. (I am talking about where the wheel holders attach to the bottom of the fridge,, and not the wheel itself).

Usually these are not riveted in, to allow for replacements, but it is difficult to say without actually inspecting it. Once you take a look, you will know exactly what's to be done :)

@mmechanics: WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT A LID SWITCH???? THIS IS ABOUT THE WHEEL!!!!

No problem, please do take a look at Benimur's solution as well. That may be of help.

And yes, having plastic hollow coasters instead of a solid wheel on a heavy appliance like a fridge IS a bad idea..well..

  • Swilin Sampson
    Swilin Sampson Nov 10, 2008

Hmm..seems to be that Benimur's links to the pics are not working..

In any case, you will have to replace the whole wheel assembly (including the brackets) and not just the wheel itself.

    Well done!

I told you you'd be able to figure it out once you took a look :) And thank you for posting the procedure here. I am sure others would also be able to benefit from it.

    Cheers!

Don,
Most refrigerators do not have wheels that can be adjusted in the rear. The only adjustable ones are the two up front.

Refrigerator and freezer get cold but freezer does not freeze whirlpool 1997 model et22dkxfn00

Can you remove the rear panel in the back of your freezer and tell me what the frost pattern looks like? When a refrigerator loses Freon the frost pattern looks like this photo HERE If the rear wall of your freezer looks like this you still are having a defrost problem photo HERE
Here is what that will look like behind the rear panel of the freezer should the defrost heater and defrost thermostat need replaced HERE
You mentioned that you have already replaced the defrost timer so we should not be concerned about that. The defrost heater=> 2315530 Defrost Heater

The defrost thermostat=> 4387503 Defrost Thermostat

Whirlpool refrigerator - condensation, ?clogged drain

The stopped up drain tube is inside the freezer probably behind the rear wall. There should be screws in it to remove it. Remove any ice at the bottome and you should be able to see it. I don't know about the wheel.

Broken amana refrigerator wheels

Usually the roller for the rear of the fridge has an axle that is just a pin that will slide out(need a model # to know for sure) and the weight of the fridge holds the pin in place.
