Question about Gateway PC Desktops

9 Answers

I have a gateway notebook MT3708 that no longer has any audio sounds. I've had it about 1.5 years, and the software trial stopped, so I purchased the microsoft 2007 home, business and student edition, and installed it and it didn't fix the audio problem. What next? I get an error message that that is no audio device. But, there was sound when I first got it, but not anymore.

I was told to reinstall the audio driver with proper updates....well, how do I do this?

  • gatheredblos Nov 10, 2008

I have checked the device manager and there is no indication that it has been disabled or needs updating. My audio is a sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC. It spits out a warning that installing this device driver is not recommended. and in another spot that I checked, it said that it is working properly........which it is not. Help..

  • gatheredblos Nov 10, 2008

Thank you for your suggestions. I hope that I can get it resolved with them. It's been really frustrating.

  • gatheredblos Nov 10, 2008

I will look for my disc, but everything came installed at time of purchase. So, if I find it, I will uninstall and reinstall with any updates. thanks for the suggestion.

  • gatheredblos Nov 10, 2008

I looked for any updates, and there was one that I installed, and then restarted the notebook, and nothing happened. So, I guess I'm out of luck on the update idea.

  • gatheredblos Nov 10, 2008

    Ginko,

I'm trying this download as we wait.

  • gatheredblos Nov 10, 2008

    Ginko,

The driver download is on a dial-up system so its going to take some time.

I will just take all the suggestions and see what may work, and let you know.

  • gatheredblos Nov 10, 2008

I downloaded a "driver detective" and it found 6 drivers out of date. So hopefully this will fix the problem. Thank you.

Probably you already tried this audio driver file from Gateway computers for your computer, install it anyway before the next step.

After the driver installation Windows will ask for a reboot, choose not to.

Go back to the Device Manager and Uninstall the Sigmatel Audio Driver then reboot the computer.

Windows will automatically re-install the driver on start.

Might as well check the Volume Control (the level or if it's Muted) and the manual volume control if yours have.

Hi,

For a Gateway MT3708 notebook, it may be necessary to re-install the audio drivers/software. They are:

  • for notebooks using Windows Vista, (32-bit/64-bit) Sigmatel Audio Driver version: 6.10.5337.0 (ftp://esupport:vImvF88@ftp.gateway.com/pub/hardware_support/drivers/win_vista/audio/D20007-003-001.exe)
  • for notebooks using Windows XP, Sigmatel Audio Driver version: 5.10.5615.0 (ftp://esupport:vImvF88@ftp.gateway.com/pub/hardware_support/drivers/win_xp/sound/D00800-001-001.exe)
Should that be not corrective, pls start here or click here.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Download this file and run it on your laptop:
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?ref=nofind&ct=fn&param=gtwupd.exe

It automatically updates all drivers for your laptop. Should you still have problems after installing the updated driver, I would reckon you have a faulty sound card.

If the problem is not with the driver or sound card (not sure if this is onboard sound), then you may want to check and see if the built-in speakers in your laptop are actually functioning or not..

  • Swilin Sampson
    Swilin Sampson Nov 10, 2008

Check using a headphone. If you get sound through headphones, then the problem is with the speakers. However if there is no sound even in the headphones, it could indicate a faulty sound card.

Also, have you checked the audio properties to see if you have selected the correct playback and mixing device? (Ensure nothing is muted, of course). Try going into the driver details (by right clicking and selecting
Properties on My Computer, finding device manager, and double click the
sound card) and try rolling back the driver to the older version. It
could be a sneaky windows update that has updated the driver but
rendered it useless in the mean time.

Tell me, did you have the audio issue immediately after installing MS Office 2007, or before?

If it happened right after installation of Office 2007, I think there me be some software conflict. I would recommend uninstalling Office 2007 (through control panel) and re-run the driver update. Now see if you have sound. If you do, then it was a software clash issue.

Now you can reinstall Office 2007 using a 'clean boot' method as outlined here:
    If you have XP:
    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG --> Click OK
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Process SYSTEM.INI file
    4. Uncheck Process WIN.INI file
    5. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    6. Click on the Services tab
    7. At the bottom, check Hide All Microsoft Services
    8. Uncheck all boxes in the window or click the button labeled Disable All
    6. Click OK
    7. Click Restart

After restarting, reinstall the MS Office 2007 software. Next, do the following:

    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG--> Click OK
    2. Replace checkmarks in the items that you previously removed them from.
    3. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    4. Click OK
    5. Click YES, when asked to restart your computer

If you have Vista, go here.

First thing you need to do here is to check the status of your audio device under Device manager, because I'm sure that its not installed properly and it don;t have the driver for it, Go to device manager and look for any device that has an exclamation or has an Xmark under sound and video controller, if you see there an audio device that is disable just right click on it and click Enable, but if you have a audio device there that has an exclamation mark you need to run the setup cd for your audio device to install the driver for it...

On a six year old Gateway 310x whenever I turn it on the screen says 'We apologieze for inconvenience ... then offers various prompts for Safe mode, etc. I have tried each one and the same Gateway screen,...

sounds to me like you have gotten a virus or some other type of malware causing your system files to get corrupted. Unfortunately without a clean install disk you may not be able to recover your system. Question though, when you restart and get to your first boot screen do you see a function key prompt like f12 for system restore? You may have the capabilities to restore your computer already set into the motherboard.

Of course the only problem with that is you have to go and get the original **** put on it by the manufacturer. Free trials etc... If possible you can also try to find a third party site that can offer you a free download of the software. This is not piracy if you're using the original product registration key provided by your computer manufacturer. Because you've already paid for the right to use that key. If however you do not have a product key available you've already purchased then you will have to buy a new one from Microsoft.

Well, I hope this solution helps you and good luck..

Can not ger microsoft word to load it ask for product key and i got it and now it says it is invailad

True love,

Did you get Microsoft word/office installed with your PC? Or as a free download?

If so you likely have received what is called a "Trial" version. Which is only valid for a certain period of time. Once the time expires the want you to either pay for a permanent liscense or stop using the software.

If you believe you HAVE a permanent liscense, then you can contact Microsoft to clear things up and get an key to reactivate office. If it WAS a trial then you have 2 choices.

1.) Contact Microsoft to purchase a permanent liscense

2.) Get one of the "Free" office suites that are out there Suns "OpenOffice" seems to be one of the most popular of the free opensource office replacements and has just about every function that MS Office does.

Hope this helps you
