Question about Hitachi 60V500 60" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television
There is a blue aura of light that has appeared at the bottom of my screen. It has been starting to spread over the last couple days and is now about 1.5 feet long across the bottom of the screen. I thought it might be a magnetic problem but all the electronics near the tv have been there for the last five months. I moved everything away just in case and it still hasn't changed anything. Any ideas?
Check 2 things.
First, make sure the lenses, mirrors, and back of screen are spotless. Second, look into the CRT's when the set is running. There is a real good chance cooling fluid leaked out or got cloudy. It's supposed to be a clear oily fluid (a combo of glycerine, water, sometimes methyl alcohol and preservatives) and will be around the tube and chassis if leaking. Rebuilding the assembly is possible (Magnavox had the same problem, as they were a Hitachi chassis), but the CRT is usually damaged. If I have to rebuild them, all 3 are done in one shot - new fluid, seals, filler spout.
Besides that, the tubes are cheap and lose their sharpness with age (gets gassy). Had real problems with that and the only correct solution is to replace all 3 tubes. You could cheap out with one tube, but setting the color balance (grey scale) is often difficult if not impossible.
