Question about Seagate FreeAgent Pro - 500GB, 7200 RPM, USB 2.0, eSATA, External 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Connecting my Seagate 500GB USB drive reboots PC continuously.

When I connect my Seagate 500GB USB hard drive to my desktop PC or my notebook (both running XP Home), the computers reboot. If the computer is on when I connect it, the computer begins to reboot over and over again. If I connect the Seagate to the computer and then turn it on, the computer still reboots over and over again. I can not boot up either of my computers when the Seagate is attached to it, so I can not scan the Seagate for malware or recover any of the data. What would cause the computer to loop in a reboot process when the Seagate is attached to it? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Try this:

1. Turn off the power supply to the hard drive.
2. Turn off your PC/laptop.
3. Connect the hard drive to the PC/laptop.
4. Turn on both devices.

It worked with mine.

You could also try installing Seagate Manager which can check for errors on the drive.

My seagate external hdd 500gb is not working and is not detected and regonised in any pc..

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Try connecting it to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting it to a different computer.

If the problem persists, either:

* the USB cable is damaged,

* inside the enclosure, the disk-drive is not functioning
(although the lamp indicates that it is getting electrical power)

* inside the enclosure, the USB-to-disk-drive adapter has failed.

If the warranty is still valid, Seagate will replace it, at no cost to you.

Or, open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and temporarily connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it is working at all.

Or, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and mount it into the enclosure, to make a "new" external disk-drive.

Cannot access / view hard drive from my PC.

Try connecting it to a different USB port on your computer.
Try connecting it to a USB port on a different computer.
If the problem continues, then one of the two major components inside the enclosure:
* disk-drive
* USB-to-disk-drive adapter
have failed.
Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the disk-drive, by itself, still is accessible. If not, then you could buy a new disk-drive, and "transplant" it into the enclosure, to "resurrect" your external enclosure.

Is the disk-drive still under warranty? If so, contact Seagate, and exercise the warranty, to get a replacement.

External hard drives are plug and play, the drivers are build into windows.
IF the hard drive was connected when your computed crashed, and the hard drive was in use, it may have damaged it.
If it does not automatically connect to other PC's looks like it has been damaged

I have a 1tb seagate desktop, the light doesn't turn on and it makes a clicking sound and when plugged in the computer nothing happens

Try first connecting the drive to a different USB port on your computer and check if it will be working fine, but if still not working better try connecting it to a different computer ad check if same result. If still not working try using a different USB cable and see if that will fix the problem but if still not working the drive is already bad and better try to check it with the manufacturer of your drive and have them recover your data inside it.
