Question about Acer Aspire 3680 Laptop

Recover an Acer 3680

The hard drive on my wife's Acer 3680 died a few months ago. It was a physically bad drive that would not boot at all. I even took it out and connected it to other computers as an external drive, but they couldn't see it at all and it would not spin up. Because she couldn't be without it long enough for Acer to fix it, I just bought a new hard drive and put a fresh install of Vista on it from another Vista Business license I had.

Now, I want to use my Vista Business license in another computer, so I need to restore this Acer back to factory settings. It came with Vista Home Basic. Because the hard drive is completely dead (and got lost in a move), I can't restore from the hidden partition. My question is... Will Acer's eRecovery CD that they offer for sale include Vista? The original hard drive is toast, so I need a recovery option that includes the OS. Any thoughts?

    I have a 3680 and the hard drive tanked the other day. Is this thing fixable? The error message that kept coming up was something like the harddisk has a bad block or something like that. Where did you find a harddrive? and how much was it?

I had the same problem...I originally thought it might be a ram chip and I started testing them...Turns out that the second ram socket was bad and I just had to remove one of the ram chips.

Whilst this error can occur due to a faulty hard drive or corrupt page file, but is also a symptom of faulty RAM memory. Unless you have heard "clunking" noises from your new hard drive, its unlikely to be the new disk this time.

Re-seat the memory first. If you have two memory modules installed try removing one at a time (see page 67 of the manual here ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_5600/manual/AS%205600_3680.pdf )

Check the System Log in Event Viewer for additional error messages that might help pinpoint the device causing the error. Disabling memory caching of the BIOS might also resolve it. Finally, if all the above steps fail to resolve the error, take the system to a repair facility for diagnostic testing. If you the laptop is overheating, or you can't hear the fan running then fan failure might also be a possible cause.

  • prior to the recovery... have someone pull your hard drive and recover the "precious" files & pics on the drive... It's expensive at Best Buy... so watch out!!!
  • System recovery shouldn't have you loose all files.. if a recovery point is there... the trick is to only recover to the most recent point that you can. When Windows updates the software to Service Pack X for example, a recovery point would have been created automatically

If it's still under warranty call Acer, it sounds like a bad hard drive to me.

Stalls on opening desktop


Reformat the hard drive and start over with the Xp after you download the Xp drivers. The disk and OS  that came with it was Xp or VISTA?

Computer stoped working


If you're certain that the battery is fully charged, then there could be an issue with your hard drive, or possibly motherboard.

Has the laptop ever been wet, or outdoors overnight?

See if you can boot from your disk drive by inserting your operating system disk in the drive when you turn it on.

Also double check that the outlet you're using is actually supplying power, I have bad outlets in some parts of my house where my laptop won't charge up.

hi..try to remove unplug or plug in the Hard Drive,, if cant work you or nothing happens you need to re-place the hard drive.about files theirs nothing ways to recover the files if the Hard Drive is totally defective..Thanks..and GOOD LUCK...^_^
