Question about Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

No more beeps

My Garmin 305 no longer beeps. I have gone into system settings and "tone" is set to "key and message". It used to beep when I turned it on and when I pressed buttons. Now I want to use it for more custom interval workouts and the unit is silent all the time. This doesn't work well when biking or it is dark out.

I have the same issue. Worked great for almost one year, then all of a sudden no sound. I have checked everywhere and nothing seems to fix it.

I also just discovered this on my forerunner 305.    I wanted to start using this feature and noticed it didn't work

  • tombakken Dec 07, 2008

    Same problem for me.

My Forerunner 305 "beeped" reliably for the past couple of years. Now that I'm doing interval training I need the beep...but the sound function is no longer working properly. I've reset all features back to factory defaults. I've downloaded all firmware and software updates from Still no sound. I've searched the internet for solutions....none forthcoming yet.

Same problem with my 205 - after about a year the beep's stopped!

  • bglarson11 Feb 05, 2009

Just got my 305 last week and tried setting HR custom alerts. I have not been able to hear any tones at all except for button-pushing beeps.

  • christophebp Feb 17, 2009

Same issue as reported. the "tones" setting is correct but no sound coming out of my 205. Very frustrating!

  • Anonymous Mar 04, 2009

Exactly the same problem. The unit is just over a year old and the alerts are no longer audible. I have returned the unit to Garmin at their instruction.

  • johnaf777 Mar 14, 2009

I have the same problem. Had the unit for about two years then it quit working but sometimes works for a few moments then quits again. The volume is also very low and it seems to only do the lower frequency beeps. I suspect that moisture got inside the unit and corroded the piezzo. I might try and open it and see if I can clean the piezzo..!!?? I really doubt Garmin would fix it for free. Another poor quality consumer electronics product. When things like this happen I ask myself if I really need any of it...???

I have this problem as well and am going to contact Garmin to see if I can get it resolved.

I have Forerunner 301 and recently changed over to a 305. The volume is so low I can bearly hear it even if put up to my ear

  • werner belgi Apr 19, 2009

Just bought  a new 305.  Beep tone level is very low and need to keep the device close to my head to ear the beep.
    Is this a software problem.

Have Talkabout 250 and want to turn off the beeping. any ideas

The following instructions are for the T289, which is very similar to the T250. It is possible they will work to turn off your beeps.

Alert Tones

The Alert Tones (beeps) on the Talkabout radios are set at a fixed volume

level and cannot be lowered. However, Alert Tones can be disabled. When

Alert Tones are disabled, the radio will receive messages at the volume

setting you've selected, but you will not hear beeps when you press control

Disabling Alert Tones:

1. Hold down the Monitor button while you turn radio on.

2. To re-activate Alert Tones, turn the radio off, then on again while holding
the Monitor button down.

I seem to have lost the alarm (BEEP) on my Garmin 305.

It's a known problem. The little speakers inside get corroded and gradually get quieter and quieter. If you are still within warranty, then send it back to Garmin for a fix. If not, there isn't a home-user fix for this problem, so you'll have to decide if it's worth the $$ to get it fixed. Personally, I decided to get mine fixed.

Need help

Make sure that in the set-up, you do not have the feature turned on that makes a beep for each minute in use. This is a common cause.

Check the user guide for details.
