The line is 5/10" wide and 11' across the page. It is light enough so that you can still read the print under the line. I have removed and reinstalled the cartridge which is almost brand new. Please advise details of any special cleaning if appropriate.

This is a copier not a printer. It cannot be connected to a PC

What chemical should be used to clean the optical mirror?
    Where is the optical mirror?

  • Bobrcr Nov 09, 2008

The question about where the optical mirror is located has not been answered. I have over 30 years experience in working on copiers, all of them much larger than this one.

The mirror is inside the copier and obviously you have to open it.

Lens and Mirrors: These are the components of the conventional analog copier that convey the scanned image from the glass to the photoconductor drum. The mirrors direct the light through the lens (for focusing or magnification) to the drum.

Tada! it's near the drum.

Try printing a test page to align and clean the printer cartridges and if it is still there, try un-installing and re-installing the software that came with the printer. To print a test page, go to control panel, go to printers and faxes, find your printer on the list, right click on it and go to properties, and on that list go all the way down to the bottom page and click print test page.
To un-install the software, go to control panel, go to add or remove programs, find your printing program on the list and select remove, and after removing, restart your computer and put the software back on. It should work then.

There is something not properly lined up. Make sure the cartrige is inserted correctly. You could contact cannon and see what they say. I really need more info such as size, location, and qualities of the line.

Is it always in the same position on the paper, or does it vary?

You could try cleaning the optical mirror, rollers and fuser roller first..

It could also be that there is a fault with the drum unit which will have to be replaced. This usually happens on units that have more than 50,000 copies made. The drum could have a dent, etc where the toner gets stuck and produces the streaks. If the streaks occur more or less in the same area on every page, then this is most likely the issue.

This will require a replacement of the drum, for which a service call will be required.

@ jazzboy : THIS IS NOT A PRINTER.

Best would be to use isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Dont saturate it though! However, if you are not familiar with opening up copiers, I wouldn't recommend this.

In all likelihood, its the drum unit and will have to be replaced..

Blank copies from copier

You don't say what model your fax is.

In general. If when copying you get a Full BLACK page printed then the scanner lamp is not lit. As no light is reflected into the image scanner, it interprets this as BLACK information so therefore only black is printed. Look into the ADF while the document is being scanned and I bet you will see no green light at all. A new Contact image sensor should cure it.

Our copier says to "clean

When you open the cover you will see two glass plates. the one on the left (smaller one) is for the feeder and the larger on is for an A4 sheet. Look at the small glass plate with a torch (flashlight) and you will see some muck stuck to it. remove it and see how it copies now. Should be clear.

When making a copy on our Canon copier (super G3; image class MF4150) we are getting a vertical black line down the entire length of the paper. Is there something we can do to fix it? SG

You can fix this yourself by cleaning the scanner glass. When you insert a document to make a copy it is pulled in and travels over a thin strip of glass. When something gets stuck on this glass it is read or scanned as a solid line. What you need to do is make a copy. Then put that copy in the feeder the same way you put the original document in. Now the line on the copy will "line up" with the area of the glass that has something stuck to it. Use this as a guide to pop open the feeder cover, locate the glass and clean it with a cloth dampened with a bit of glass cleaner. Once you have it cleaned just run a copy again and the line should be gone. Sometimes a small flashlight helps to locate the glass.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Black line down left side of sheet, if i'm copying a page that is and i can't get rid of it no matter what i try i've changed the drum and the toner and still get a line down the whole sheet

If the received fax's are ok and there is no line; and you only get the line when you make a copy....I assume the people you send to are also getting the black line down the page,?? then the problem is in the optics...favorite is some kind of dirt, glue, or corrector fluid on the glass that the original passes over when you make the copy.

Our canon laser fax 1060p receives faxes fine but send out a total black page (also the copy function is a total black page)

No power/failed contact image sensor. If under contract get replaced. It is poss. that a "standard white setting adj." could fix it, but doubtful with a black copy. -Carl

Canon B640 printing problem

The scanner lamp is not working. When making a copy, the lamp lights the source document, so if there is no light, the source document 'looks' black. Your machine will need to be serviced.
