The problem still exists. It is a thermal problem that comes and goes, but is mostly bad. The audio is perfect using the VCR, but the TV adio is mostly gone all the time. It crackles and pops from time to time, but it is difficult to thermal spot the trouble. Not having a schematic complicates the problem. thanks for you suggestion. jack

Hi there, This sounds like an input control error.
If you find the menu section, then choose Av inputs, you can adjust the settings, I.e. stereo Video or Av (if you are using scart leads then choose Av.
Hope this helps, Chris

No sound. Picture is good. When a VCR is plugged into it the sound does work.

If sound when a vcr is connected the set is ok as far as sound goes--something is not connected or right with the settings in the menu or if you have a headphone jack built into the set it may be the issue.

Combos are like this--one part does not work and it becomes useless.

The headphone jack if it has one is your best hope--supposed to cut audio off when a jack is inserted but the jacks on the rear or front bypass that.

The vcr writing on the tv screen says "SAP" and the sound won't play. How do I turn SAP off?

Hello
SAP means Secondary Audio Programme. To cancel this, you have to get into the Minu of your TV, and surf through to get the SAP display window. There you have to set the SAP of OFF. For more details go to the user manual of your TV. OK.

Vcr will not record sound any more.

Try with another cable, the cable may either be loose or damaged. If that doesn't work it is a problem with the VCR itsself

A common problem with this model are leaky transistors in the relay drive circuit that powers on the TV. That is electrical leakage, not anything physical you can see. The transistors should be labeled Q1701 and Q1702, and would have to be replaced by soldering, so a trip to a repair shop may be necessary. The DVD uses a standby power supply I believe, which is why it appears to work OK.
