Question about Sylvania 6424TF 24" TV

1 Answer

No power The tv simply has no power, not even the red indicator light is coming on. This happened without warning. One day it worked fine, the next day...nothing.

We're having the same problem with this TV. With the exception that every so often it does come back on and work for a while. That leads me to think it has a failing component inside that gets over heated and shuts the TV down possibly. The TV worked decently for just over one year beyond the purchased Kmart 2yr extended warranty. I would also like to know if there is a fix for the problem without having to take it to a repair shop and also if it is a possible fire hazard risk to our home if it is left plugged in. The TV cost $135.00 plus another $20 for a 2yr Kmart ext warranty. A repair shop bill would probably exceed that cost. Three years use of a TV and then it just fails is just not acceptable. Bit of a rant here: Sylvania is NOT Sylvania the trusted good old brand it once was but rather now just a name bought by Funai to deceptively sell their cheaply made products. I truly believe that is deceptive trade practice and buyers beware. End of rant. Sorry, but people need to know.

I meant to add to my posted reply to this problem in that we're having the same problem with this TV:

This is a possible solution to the problem that unfortunately did not work for us. When we called the 1-800 support number for Funai, the tech on the line had only one suggestion other than it needing a repair shop fix. He suggested that we unplug its power cord for 45 minutes. This, he said,"would let all the power drain out of a big chip inside on its switchboard and let it reset itself upon being plugged back in". Sounded silly to me but in regards to being reset it does sound possible as most electronics these days do need to be reset time to time to fix troubles. I must add in regards to Funai that the tech was very kind, compassionate, empathetic and helpful regarding our trouble with the TV. I say that because I ranted against Funai in my eariler posting. I still stand behind my thoughts on that rant though because deceptive trade practices are basically a form of stealing hard earned money from a person for a product that is sold to them under deceptive practices. Buyer beware.

Flashing Green Power on light not picture

Last Saturday evening, I experienced the exact same behavior on my Panasonic PT-52LCX65; it shut itself off without warning. I turned it back on, and it shut itself back off after about a minute, and the red "Lamp" LED on the TV began blinking.

I never got any warning message that the lamp was about to go out, but I've just replaced the lamp and now the TV is working just fine. We had to mail-order the new lamp, because neither H. H. Gregg (where I bought the TV on "Black Friday" 3 years ago), Fry's Electronics, nor Best Buy carries the part locally.

My wife found the new bulb WITH its holding apparatus for something like $120 online, roughly half what other sites were charging. We paid roughly $55 for UPS Next Day Air. The first bulb that was sent arrived broken (some UPS rep apparently thought "Fragile" meant "Shake and Drop"), but the company we ordered from cheerfully rushed us another one, and the second one was in much better shape. (Panasonic doesn't pack these replacement bulbs very well; there's a heavy bulb with a lot of air around it that Panasonic doesn't fill.)

More details available if anyone wants 'em. Hope this helps. -- ChuckE

Defintely getting power, but not switching on.

There are several possibilities. Let's start with the easiest two. First the battery, take it out and try starting up only with the power supply. Then the memory chips. If a memory chip fails it can cause a no start in IBM's. Take the memory out and try it. Then try it, putting them in one at a time. If these don't work, then I'm afraid your problem lies within. Namingly the power management chip on the motherboard. The pm chip controls the power input, and allows such functions as switching between battery and AC, and battery charging. The pm chip can go without warning, and just because it lights and shows charging doesn't mean this chip hasn't malfunctioned. I've had several IBM's come through my shop that have experienced the same problem you're describing. I've also had them with problems like; it will only power with the battery, won't charge the battery, will charge battery and only run with battery shuts down while charging, only power under AC, etc... all pm chip related issues. Unfortunately, the only solution is motherboard replacement.

42" Plasma TV Problem

same frustrating symptoms on brand new 42inch here! tv just turns itself off sometimes without warning or if changing to certain channels. leaves red light flashing for a while then red light goes away. any attempts with remote gives flashing green liht on tv. manual power off and on restarts tv but auto off again. found while manual power on keep changing channel on remote till stable picture appears. then use remote to shut down tv - solid red light indicates standby mode. then use remote to turn on again... till next time it happens. but what is technical fault??
