You should put your the recovery cd that comes with your laptop before going to the boot menu. Otherwise, you should buy a new copy of operating system cd (i.e. Windows, Linux, etc.).

Dell vostro 200 (vista OS) is stuck on a black screen after Dell splash screen. I tried to do a restore in the F8 menu but once I select repair computer I do not get any other options. Instead I am...

Lost Windows password:

  • Login as Administrator. Try with no password (load safe mode if you don't see Administrator). Press F8 during boot to access Safe Mode. XP only.
  • Login as other user (if other user is available) and manage users. Must be an administrator.
  • Reformat computer.
  • Use 3rd party software to remove password. Like http://www.top-password.com/reset-windows-password.html
  • Free software option would be Hirens Boot CD. This one is command prompt only. http://www.hirensbootcd.org/ Must follow instruction exactly.

`What is the password for phoneix bios setup utility

Toshiba has been leading the pack in this kind of security for years now. The only way to reset the BIOS password on THAT laptop, is to send it back to Toshiba.

Now, do you know what Toshiba will do next? Toshiba will ONLY send the laptop back to the current registered owner.

So, here is what you do. If the previous owner registered their laptop with Toshiba,

THEY have to transfer the ownership to you... you can't do that. THEN, you can send it back to Toshiba to have the BIOS password cleared.

THEN Toshiba will send it back, repaired, to you.

You cannot jump the BIOS chip, since the password is not stored there, but rather it is stored in an EPROM chip that does not require electricity.

So you cannot even remove the CMOS battery to clear the password.

You cannot use a special program and a floppy disc, because that Toshiba will not access the floppy disc before it accesses the BIOS... and since you will hit the password first, you can't access that software to try to clear the password

or you might try

How do I repair/replace Windows 7 starter boot manager ?

The boot manager is on the hard drive. It sits at the start of Windows. Since you have a netbook, you are not able to just put in a CD to repair it. An external CD (connected by USB) would work. If you have Windows 7 on a flash drive, you could boot from that.
This is the one major drawback of having a netbook, I think.
