There is a jig that you can buy that makes this job SO much eaiser. It is a universal jig that clamps onto the deck and keeps the blade from spinning so you can use a ratchet to remove the nut holding the blade on. One name brand is called a "Blade Hog". You should be able to find one of these at one of the bog box hardware stores.

Hope this helps,

How to remove mower blade for dr brush mower

I have 2 of them. You should invest in a torque wrench (maybe $35 or so). The answer is you remove the blades on the DR just the same way as any lawn tractor or gas push mower, for that matter. You need to first "scotch" the blade (use a 2x4 or a special tool you can pick up at Sears). This keeps the blade from turning while you are loosening or tightening it. A torque wrench is very heavy and the shaft of the ratchet is quite long, giving you much more torque than a regular socket wrench- which you may need if the nut has been on for a very long time and/or is rusty. I believe they take a 15/16 socket. You can double check me on the DR website. Once you have it off, and after you sharpen, replace it or whatever you need to do, put it back exactly as it went on and torque it to about 90 lbs. It's a good idea to spray some Liquid Wrench on the threads and nut before and after you remove it. The last thing is to be careful not to cut yourself. Also you really need a manual for these machines. They're beasts, but tricky and fairly sophisticated when it comes to repairs, belts, springs, etc., but you will need to sharpen the blades every season if you use it a lot, so you need to know how to do this. Get that torque wrench! God luck. . .

How to keep a nice green lawn.

I find it is wise to sharpen the lawn tractor or even the lawn mower blades at least every three weeks depending the hours your unit has run. You will find the grass looks better being cut with sharp blades .Dull blades tears the grass and your lawn will bruise and turn yellow as well

What is the best and safest way to remove the blades from my Snapper riding lawn tractor/mower in order to sharpen them?

Hi, the best way us to raise the front of the mower and use a rattle gun to undo them. If you do not have one you can place a block of wood between a blade and the deck. The blades will be tight and are a normal right hand thread. Hope this helps, regards Phil.

The mower is mowing uneven in the front. what can i do? it seems that it is scalping the grass but both sides are level

Look under the mower deck. If you can't see well and work on it, you may have to remove the mower deck and flip it over on the ground. Grass and mud buildup in the decj could cause a blade to pinch grass, 'scalping' the lawn. Clean it all out. Dull blades cause cut grass to look torn and brown. Remove and sharpen. Bent blade will cause uneven cut. Replace it. Good luck! Please rate if you found this helpful, thanks!

I would like to replace the mulching blades on my Sears Craftsman riding mower with regular cutting blades. I can find plenty of sources for new mulching blades, but not cutting blades. My mower is a model...

The straight blade for the 42 inch mower is 138971.They cut better and are easier to sharpen and you will need them if you use a gass catcher. If you do not want to use sears for parts you may be able to find good deals on ebay.

Craftsman 42" riding lawn mower blade free spinning but wont cut

It sounds to me that you need a new mower deck drive belt, or your blades need sharpening. If the blade edges are rounded, they won't cut butter... Also, when mower is off, check mower deck drive pulleys to make sure you don't have any that are locked up or are dragging. You can check this by pulling the belt away from pulley and spinning the pulley by hand. MOWER MUST BE OFF before attempting any of these checks. You would be surprised how many people would try this with the mower running.
Hope this helps
