Use your OS disk to access the Vista repair tools.
Even for those without an OS disc, Vista has repair tools built in.

To access them, boot the computer, but when you see the “Microsoft (C)” with the moving lines, hold the power button until it shuts down. Now windows thinks it didn’t boot properly, and when you turn it back on, you should get the option to run Windows Startup Repair.

Choose this. When it loads, cancel the scan it starts (it won’t find anything anyway), and choose the text on the bottom that says something like “Show advanced repair options.” which should get you to a command prompt option. (Some folks are saying that it asked for the user, and they changed from the Administrator to their user account in order to get access to a few more tools, including a command prompt where you can run fixes).

You can also get to a command prompt via holding down, or repeatedly clicking, F8 as the computer begins its reboot. - select safe with command line.

note that this may take a few runs through the reboot F8 routine as my initial runs still ended up with the forever loop. Which is why the OS disk route - if your machine came with or you later bought such a disk - is preferred. If you are lucky ebough to have a restore point established, that option appears to work on a little less than half the machines I've run into.

Once you have the command prompt the need is to remove a file “pending.xml” that is causing the forever loop Instead of deleting the “pending.xml” files from the c:\windows\winsxs folder I renamed it, so that it can be put back later if needed.

This seemed to do the trick for me. But if it still hangs on "Stage 3 at 0%" with reboot and hang again forever cycle continuing, just do a repeat of the F8, and select safe mode w/networking. Stage 3 may well continue and finish normally (it didn't for me) but in any case after the second "safe" reboot a boot to normal windows was possible for the folks I was helping.

It seems like you are blocked in update.Reinstall OS.

My computer is stuck in the configuring updates: stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete.

give it some time to install that update, if its still not working then might be possible that the update was not downloaded properly or it got corrupted while installation due to which its stucked on stage 3 of 3.

In these situations we can try to restart the computer into the safe mode and and then check which update is causing the computer to stuck on stage 3 of 3. If possible try to kill that update in safe mode too. To help you on that you need to provide me some more information.

Which operating system are you using?

I have a acer aspier 3515-2153 laptop. It wont go to the user screen.it will turn on say configuring updates then it shuts off agin. How do i fix it i cant afford another computer pleasehelp!!!

HI Steel,

For this you dont need to buy another computer.
Follow the steps.
1. Try safe boot, F8 key @ BIOS screen just after you turn on the system. Choose safe boot from menu.
2. In safeboot.
Go to control pannel and choose option Show windows updates. else they may also be visible by default.
3. Minimise the window.
4. after you find the system is turned up completely.
close the opened window without touching anything.
5. give the system a complete shutdown.
6. reboot.
7. System may say " System has recovered after a serious error"

Still if it does not works.

1.insert the OS disk.
2. choose to follow wizard seriously reading each step.
3. It will ask you ro repair your OS.
Choose this option.
4. let the system recover (The process is slow; may take 30 mins or more)

Downloaded windows automatic update stuck on 3 of 3 for last few days. tried last known good config does nothing, i always return to updating 3 of 3 cannot get my comp to do anything else. help desperately...

An issue has been identified by Microsoft that, after installing Windows Updates, a Computer displays a Configuring updates: stage 3 of 3. 0% complete message, reboots, comes back to that message again, and repeats the cycle. This problem occurs when Windows Update is attempting to install update 937287.

Follow this procedure to resolve the error:

1. Remove all connected peripheral Devices from the Computer.

2. Press and hold the power button until the Computer completely shuts down.

3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

4. Leave the Computer without any power for at least 30 seconds.

5. Reconnect the Computer to the power supply and then turn it back on.

6. Allow the Computer to start normally.

NOTE 1: Once the Computer has completely started into the Operating System, Windows Updates should automatically finish installing the update. If the update again fails to install completely, restart the Computer in Safe Mode (by tapping the F8 Kay at Start-up) and use the System Restore feature to return the Computer to a time before the issue started.

Click the Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.

NOTE 2: To avoid this issue, obtain and install update 937287 from the Microsoft Download Center separately from all other updates on the Windows Update site. Install the update that applies to your version of Windows Vista so that you can successfully install future updates.

For more information about this error, refer to the Microsoft KB Article ID 949358.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot logon to my PC

Start your PC in safe mode, to do this repeatedly tap the F8 key as soon as you turn the power on. This will then bring up an "options" screen listing boot in safe mode, safe mode with network support etc. Just use safe mode. If it goes directly to windows instead - shut it off and try again til u get the safe mode screen. The arrow keys control the selection to choose. When it starts in safe mode a black screen will usually appear with a bunch of writing, this is normal, after that it may "hang" for as long as 5 minutes, before coming up with a login screen. Sometimes hitting enter or escape will bring up the login screen faster. When you have a login screen, login and disable the updates using the software control options for the software that is trying to update. You might also go to control panel, administrator options, then services and disable automatic updates temporarily. When your pc starts in safe mode - it starts with minimal drivers and does not run updates- this allows you to change settings. You can then reboot normally and it should start properly without updating before starting.

I have a dell thinkpad that asked to update windows the other day. I accepted it, but ever since, my laptop won't turn on at all. It says it can't initialize and goes to a black screen. Any...

If you turn the computer on and press the F8 key do you get a menu that starts with Safe Mode? Select Last Known Good Configuration, it should set you back to before you updated Windows.

I have an acer aspire laptop, when i start it up its says configuring updates stage 3 of 3 0% complete then it will shut down come back on say the same again and shut down again. it will keep on doing this

Maybe you could try the last known good configuration. When the laptop is starting up, wait until the acer screen disappears and then tap F8 on the keyboard before the windows screen comes up. You should get a black screen with some options that say safe mode. The fourth or so option on the list will be "Last Known Good Configuration". The computer should try and load windows. Hopefully that will restore the machine before the update.

If it works it would be a good idea to go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and fully update your laptop. This will download the update manually instead of doing it with automatic updates.

On shutting down my laptop it gave the message, "installing 1 of 1" do not turn off your computer. It did not turn off all night. I turned it off by using the on/off button then shut it down...

When you start your laptop, press F8. You will get a menu (Normal boot, Reboot...). Choose Last good known configuration (something like that).
