I assume your laptop monitor is the problem , try to connect you desktop monitor at the back of your laptop there's a port at the back of it.
borrow monitor then set your desktop to connect to your laptop by using crossover ethernet cable then enable the file sharing on both computers then copy all the files on your desktop to your laptop
you need more technical knowledge regarding the set up,
another way is buy usb hard drive eclosure , then get you hard drive on your desktop and connect it in you enclosure and connect the usb port on your laptop and thats it . good thing about the enclusure is this also server as you external drive. you dnt have to set any settings in this method just plug any play in kind of method

No problem with my laptop. It is the desktop monitor. That is why I want to know if I can connect the desktop to the laptop so that I can access my files.
