borrow monitor then set your desktop to connect to your laptop by using crossover ethernet cable then enable the file sharing on both computers then copy all the files on your desktop to your laptop
you need more technical knowledge regarding the set up,

another way is buy usb hard drive eclosure , then get you hard drive on your desktop and connect it in you enclosure and connect the usb port on your laptop and thats it . good thing about the enclusure is this also server as you external drive. you dnt have to set any settings in this method just plug any play in kind of method

Monitor power light stays off though computer is running

Do you know for sure if your monitor works? If your not sure, you can try connecting a laptop up to the monitor (using the VGA port on the side of the laptop). Then pressing the "Fn" (Function) button and F4 or F5 on your keyboard. Your laptop manual should tell you how. There is usually a graphic on the one of the "F" keys of 2 types of screens (one being a laptop and another of just a square, signifying another screen type such as a TV or monitor).
If the monitor does indeed work, then follow the steps below:
Q. Does the computer post? In other words, do you see white words appear on the screen at all when you turn the computer back on?
A. If not, then there more than likely a problem with the video card on the computer.
AA. If so, then find out what error it gives you and post it here. I will give you further instruction to fix it.

I hope this helps and please vote if it does! :o) Thanks!

Acer X1700 won't connect to monitor; monitor doesn't get signal from computer.

Is the monitor getting power? Does the power button light up? Check all your connections. Power from wall to monitor. Video cable from PC to Monitor. Do you have another computer or laptop you can try plugging into the monitor? If two machines don't work on the same monitor, it's either the monitor or the video cable itself.
Hope this helps! If so, please give a rating!

I am trying to connect my HP Laptop (Compaq 6710b) to my Polycom VS7000 to use as a second monitor. I know it should work, but I have know instructions on how to link the two. Thank you! Rob Low...

You can connect a monitor to your laptop if it has a vga adapter/HDMI output on a separate graphics card (as opposed to a motherboard mounted "on board" graphics solutions) ...but I havn't heard of connecting your laptop to another computer input to use it as another monitor. Far as I know that is not possible...unless you have a very special laptop. You could, theoretically, remote connect to another computer, then you could have that computer's display on the 2nd computer...You would have to make sure "no interaction" was selected though, or someone on the laptop could access the other computer, and do whatever to it. I think Teamviewer may do it...Crossloop you need to have someone on both machines I believe. But it doesn't sound like remote connection is the solution you are asking for. What you are asking for, isn't done. (typically)

No video out to monitor from desktop.

sure not hard at all. if the monitor is connected to the default onboard video adapter, this is usually one of the first things to malfunction on a new computer. if the monitor works when connected to another machine, but when connected to the desktop the monitors amber or orange light comes on but no video, this usually means there is a connection problem. usually most modern monitors will display a "no input" or "no video" message meaning the connection to the computer is bad. try getting a new video adapter (usually pci/pcie video card) and installing into the pci/pcie video slot in the back of the computer. most are plug and play and require little to no configuration. you should be able to find a nice one for about $20 - $30 dollars at www.tigerdirect.com . hope this helps. please rate me and thanks for choosing enterprise computing solutions.

Since your laptop's display has a problem, that could indicate trouble elsewhere in the computer that is preventing you from adjusting your resolution properly. In fact, a shrunken display points more to a problem in the video processing, not in the display itself.
