Question about Hitachi 61SDX01B 61" Rear Projection Television

Multi colored vertical lines - aspect ratio - on screen menu

I have three problems.
Problem #1 - At times when I turn on the tv, multi colored vertical lines appear across the screen. I have to turn the tv off, then on and the picture appears.
Problem #2 - I have the aspect ration locked it at 4.3, however at varying times it changes by itself to 16.9. Plus the picture sometimes disappears and reappears when this happens. Sometime it does this three or four times in a row. I then have to change it to 4.3 using the remote.
Problem #3 - The volume on screen indicator and all the menu items used to be in solid colors and readable. Now everything is broken up and hard to read.
Any ideas of assistance will be appreciated. Thank you.

No HDMI hookup. Main hookup is component video cables. Prolem #1 has been going on for a long time. Problems #2 and #3 within the last few months.

Try hooking up a dvd player to the aux option and see if the lines still appear and see if the volume and the menu items are broken. If they do, you may have to get a new color video tube or a video output board. You will need to get this checked by a professional to get this repaired.

Try doing a full tv reset by unplugging all cable cords and power cords and let it sit overnight. Then check it in the morning and see if anything changed.

Can you tell me if you have devices connected (like a cable box) via HDMI? It sounds like your aspect ratio change, color lines and loss of pic could be related to a handshake probelm on HDMI with a cable box

OK It sounds like you may problems in the DSP section (digital signal processing) which processes the video before being sent to the display tubes. The fact that you are also seeing problems with the OSD and menu displays leads me to this conclusion. The incoming signal is converted to a digital signal then the OSD and menu info are added and then the signal is sent to the display. In your case, since your display is analog (picture tubes) it has to be separated into the 3 colors and then converted back to analog and sent to the tubes. You are going to need a technician to narrrow down exactly where the problem is occurring in the DSP section.

Multi color jagged line across screen

projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

Picture is doubled and multi-color

Projection TV sets have two very common problems listed below.

Problem #1) Convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

There is a service menu that techs can use to adjust vertical and horizontal widths. If it is not an aspect ratio problem then it is likely that it needs to be adjusted.
