Take a look with a flash light around the edge of the key. There may be something in there. About all you can do is completely shut the computer down (NOT DOING THIS FIRST MAY DAMAGE YOUR HARD DRIVE) Carfully and gently tap and very lightly shake the computer, then look again. Again this should not be done very aggressively. If you can't find anything and it still doesn't work, you will probably have to have the keyboard placed. The only other thing you can try is taking a compressed air can and lowing it out. If this does not work, you can take out the keyboard (preferred only if you know what you are doing) or take it to someone that does know what they are doing.

How to identify function key on emachines keyboard

No that's the Windows key

For a desktop computer keyboard, keys F1 through F12 are the Function keys. No Fn key needed.

For a laptop computer hold the Fn key down, then tap once on the F1 through F12 keys

If i press function key then all the keys work good otherwise keys just type numbers.

You have the number lock in the ON position.
The function key is usually of a different color (usually blue or green) look for the key with has the words Num Lock of the same color as the function key usually its the same key as the ScrLK (scroll lock)key. While holding the function key press the number lock key then release all keys and try to type.
Most computers have a light that indicates when the number lock is on just like the Caps lock on a desktop its on the keyboard, on a laptop the lights are either above the keys or on the bottom of the screen, look at the lights and you should see a number 1. if its on then follow the steps above until it turns off.
Good luck

How to work f keys on top of keyboard?

if your on a laptop.. see if you can notice a "function" key.
this will enable he f keys on your laptop keyboard.
If you are using a PC desktop and have either a MS keyboard or something similar, on the keyboard, you should see a "F" or "F-Lock" key. Press this and you F keys will have functionality on keyboard.

Black screen

Depending on what kind of laptop you have, your button may look different. Look at the Function keys (all those keys up at the top that have F's in front of them) and see if there is another colored symbol on any of them. You should find a colored symbol that looks like a rectangular monitor.

Press another key toward the bottom of your keyboard that probably says "Fn" or some other kind of "Function" key - not Alt, Ctrl, or Shift. Hold that Fn key down while you press the first key you found that looks like a monitor. That will change your laptop video output mode between several different modes like: laptop LCD panel only; LCD panel and external monitor; and external monitor only.

The purpose of this is if you wanted to plug another monitor into the back of your laptop, or a projector for a meeting or presentation, etc.

Lcd connection

Hi,

It would be uncommon for a laptop not to have a function key, Fn. This would be normally located somewhere bottom left of the keyboard often after the CTRL key and/or before the Windows key. Further, it is often required to press the Fn key + F? key where the F? would be one of the F keys with the small monitor icon.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Cant make external monitor run from laptop top projector or LCD via VGA or Component in

The function key to toggle your external monitor may have the face of a monitor printed on it. If the color of the printed monitor is not the same as the majority of the printed characters on your key board, it is most likely used in combination with the Ctrl key or maybe a proprietary "Func" (function?) key. If you don't have a function key to toggle the external monitor on/off, or if it does not respond, check your system's bios to ensure the external monitor function is enabled.

Brand new Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5868 laptop display screen has gone black, even though the computer is on.

Since your laptop is brand new , you may not be familure with it's function keys , FN

Sometimes the users accidentaly presses the FN and the F5 monitor function key at the same time.
which effectively turns the notebooks display off.

D in the image below is the FN function key
and the monitor function key could be F5 , it will have a little monitor symbol on it.

When they are pressed together it will turn the notebooks display off and enable any VGA monitor connected to it's VGA ports. when pressed again , they will turn of the VGA port and turn on the notebooks display.

Laptop comes on but monitor remains black

Hello,

IT could be one of two things. First make sure that you have the laptop set to display on the LCD. Most laptops will have a Function key labeled by Fn then you will need to look at the function keys at the top F1-F12 and find the one that either says CRT/LCD or has a picture of a screen or monitor. Then, after you have found that key, you will need to press and hold the Fn key and tap the appropriate function key, this will alternate between the LCD (laptop) and CRT (monitor). If you have trouble finding the correct key combination for switching displays should be listed in the manual.

If that doesn't correct it, then I would try locating a desktop CRT and connecting it to the monitor connection on the rear of the laptop and again pressing the keys to switch between CRT/LCD. If it shows on the CRT then I would say that the LCD on the laptop is bad.

Thanks
