Question about Dell Inspiron 9300 PC Notebook

2 Answers

Memory issues Please help....have an Inspiron 9300 with 1Gb installed RAM. Today I purchased 2x1Gb RAM things to replace the 2x512mb that are in there. When i powered up, all I get is the error LED flashing and the computer won't even power up. Went to DELL support which recommended installing the latest BIOS, which I did to no effect (if anything the computer seems to be lagging now). The RAM I purchsed has the following on it: "1GB DDR2 667Mhz SODIMM". It fits in the slot just fine. Please HELP!!!

When I hit the power button, the power light comes on, and stays on for about 10 sec. and the number lock, caps lock and scroll lock, flash just for an instant. There is no hard drive motion, as well as the fan. I've checked the voltage from the battery and AC power and all check out just fine. further more, if I push the power button twice all lights mentioned before stay lite for 10 seconds. I'm a little stumped at this. There is absolutely no booting at all, and I'm stumped. The best I can think is that maybe it's a failed mother board.

Trying to help a buddy upgrade his gateway esx 500s memory as he only has 256mb, is there a limit to how much mem this comp can take or can i install 2GB 2x1GB PC2100 ECC REG MEMORY (CM12872ERX22100DI

Hi Steve Handel II,
Yes that machine has limited RAM capacity, that model can go up to 1GB of RAM total (2x512MB DIMMs.) It takes DDR PC2700, CL=2.5 unbuffered, non-ECC DDR333 memory chips. The good news is you can get them for $10-$20 most anywhere. Like HERE

Good Luck

Upgrade to 400 mhz 2x1GB memory

Hello, First thing I would try is to just install one of the new modules in the DDR1 slot and see if it boots. If it does, go into your BIOS (Use the key I believe.) and set the ?Max Memclock (Mhz)? field (Advanced Chipset Features submenu) of the BIOS to 200. Save & Exit and allow it to boot. Shut down the computer and install the second one. Again go into the BIOS and verify it is detecting both. A second thing to try if that does not work is to install the new modules, and before powering up, reset your CMOS using the jumper between the battery and the AGP slot. If the jumper is on the 1st and 2nd pin, put it on the 2nd and 3rd pin for 15 seconds. Then replace it to the original position. NOTE: Make sure the power is OFF and the power cord unplugged when you do this. You should also press and hold the Power button for 5 to 10 seconds to discharge the capacitors in the system. If this still fails to get you going, you may have high density modules which do not work in all motherboards. Did you get the modules from MS Memory Suppliers? When I did a search for your motherboard it only gave me DDR266 PC-2100 DIMMS as compatible. No DDR400 were listed even though they should be backward compatible. Hope this helps. Thanks for using Fixya. Comment back and let me know your results.

Memory installation

bev,
all the DIM's must be of same type and same size to work, otherwise it creates problem, like no boot, boot with lowest memory etc.

There is no problem in your PC, its technical issue you can not use two ore more different type RAM at the same time in a motherborad.

Thanks
Iqbal

Doesn't boot with 3Gb of ram....

Your board can only handle 2Gb of total memory.
2 x DDR2 SDRAM DIMMs, Dual Channel DDR2 533/667/800.
Check your manual.
