Question about Projection Televisions

Toshibas rear projection model 50WT29B rolling or no picture

Hi William, I've had this great TV for 6 years now and its been excellent. Its just started to have problems with the video input side of the TV and sometimes there will be no picture, sometimes the picture is scrolling from left to right whilst rolling as well. If I let it cool down for 10 mins and switch it on then it works fine for a period of time (Which is random) then something starts to break down again. I've ordered a 60" LG plasma to replace it but if possible I would like to repair it and donate it to my local primary school for their useage. I've contacted you as you look to be the right guy for sorting these out, but maybe a little to far away for a site visit.

    Hi William

The model number is in the title its a Toshiba 50WT29B. I used to build and sell PC's in the past so I'm aware of PCB's suffering from heat problems with spot soldering cracks. The only problem is where to start lol.

Just to recap its fine when cold but after a couple of mins starts to fail.

Thanks for your help and time mate.

    Tony

Tony,
From what you're describing it sounds like ring-cracked solder joints or maybe a couple of failed caps. What's the model number???
Ring cracks happen because a component on the board gets hot and cools many thousands of times over the life of the Tv and the extreme heat causes the solder to crystal and break leaving the smallest of rings around where the coponent would otherwise firmly be soldered, breaking contact with the board. The other possibility is one or more electrolytic capacitors measure high equivilent series resistance and take more time (thus heat) to reach an operating temp sufficient to dissipate voltage at a correct rate.
Drop me a post and let me know what the model number is and I can look it up for common problems in the schematics and service manual.
Bill

BTW: Uk is a bit beyond my normal servicing route... :)

The horizontal hold

If model number correct (the one posted here) set does not have a horizontal (rolls left to right) or a vertical (rolls top to bottom) control.

Verify model and brand so I may offer some suggestions

There is almost no difference in picture clarity ON or OFF a HD channel. TV was perfect before we moved in downstairs....it was BUMPED a few times going down the stairs. Is it "out-of-focus"...

I would just about put money on it saying it is your convergence board you can get it from the part store in any town for 50 $ (give or take) I had the same problem and that was the fix.

Hope this helps.

My toshiba TP50H15 color tv comes on then off and the light blink

The flashing power light on those Toshibas is usually caused by capacitors on the power board having failed solder connections. I have fixed them before by removing the power board and resoldering the capacitors. If you have experience with soldering and electronics it is an easy repair. Most shops will recommend replacing the entire board since their labor to repair it would probably cost more. Toshiba put out a service bulletin on this issue which a good technician should be aware of. (If memory serves the capacitors are C109 and C110.  Since your TV still turns on you probably haven't blown fuse F860 which often blows when these capacitors act up.)
If you would like further help with this please post a comment back here.

I have a problem with a very shaky picture on my TOSHIBA rear projection TV model 42h83 I have tried the touch focus, all I really get is two horizontal lines of each color (RGB) they roll top to bottom...

Hi, I used to work in Best Buy and one of the key things about rear projection TVs and the reason they push those service plans on you is that the tubes/colors need to be calibrated each year. You can do this yourself by checking out the following website:

Hope this helps :)

Age of tv?

I purchased mine from Circuit city back in spring of 2002 as a display model that they were no longer selling. So I would assume 2001 which would be almost 8 years old. Excellent tv!
