My monitor just started blacking out. The green light stays on but it is not in standby mode. I have to turn the monitor off, then on, then move the mouse to get it working again.

The power scheme is set to never, never, never for all options. The screen saver is set to wait 500 minutes and requires password.

checked drivers and they are up to date.
also:
when it does go off,the light stays green on the monitor,
the sound and games still play,
turning off the monitor and back on works (till next blank out)
video card fan stays on
hasn't blanked out for the last 5 hours or so

Just check that your monitor is not set to power down(Control Panel> Power Options) and check that the 'Turn Monitor Off' Power Scheme is set to never and turn off any screensaver to see if it still goes off.

Check the drivers are correct for your graphics card/on board graphics, sometimes Windows loads new generic drivers when you install updates, if it has roll back the driver.
If you are able also try doing a system restore(Start>Programmes>System Tools>System Restore) to before the problem started to see if it was a driver issue.
If all is correct, try another driver from your cards web site to see if it cures itself, if not suspect monitor is faulty, but moving the mouse, to bring it back on line sounds like a screensaver type problem.

if you have an LCD monitor.. try holding a flashlight right upto it on the next black out! it worked for me.. if you can see the screen then its the bulbs in the back that need to be replaced.
