Try going to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore. Restore to a date prior to the time when Windows was updated. If this does not work you may have to do a system recovery, which can normally be accessed during boot by pressing the F11 key.

Let me know what happens.

Password reset on dell 518

Reset Your Windows Password Using the Command Prompt

1. Boot your computer using your Windows installation disc.
2. Wait for the setup files to load, and select your language. Click Next.
3. Click the Repair your computer link on the Install Windows screen.
4. Select the operating system to repair, and note the drive letter on which the OS is installed (it is probably C: or D:). Click Next.
5. Click Command Prompt at the bottom of the list of recovery tools.
Now you need to overwrite the Sticky Keys executable with the Command Prompt executable. Sticky Keys is an accessibility feature that allows a user to tap the Shift, Ctrl, Alt, or Windows key once to achieve the same effect as holding the key down. Ordinarily, tapping Shift five times activates Sticky Keys--but with this trick, you are going to make tapping Shift five times activate the Windows Command Prompt instead.
The instructions below use drive letter C: as an example. If your operating system is installed on another drive, replace C: with the appropriate drive letter.
1. In the Command Prompt window, type copy c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe c:\ and press Enter.
2. Type copy /y c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe and press Enter.
3. Exit the Command Prompt and reboot the computer. At the login screen, tap Shift five times. The Command Prompt will pop up.
4. Type net user username password, replacing username with your username and password with a new password.
5. Exit the Command Prompt, and log in using your new password.
To prevent another user from exploiting the same trick to reset your password, you can restore Sticky Keys as follows:
1. Step through the instructions above to boot the PC using your Windows installation disc, open the recovery tools, and launch the Command Prompt.
2. Type copy /y c:\sethc.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe and press Enter.
3. Exit the Command Prompt and reboot the computer. Pressing Shift five times will now activate Sticky Keys instead of the Command Prompt. Store your Windows installation disc in a secure location.

You may have (accidentally) activated the Windows "Accessibility" tools. One of the tools is "Sticky Keys". For example, people with impaired motor-skills can press CTRL, and then press ALT, and then press DELETE, to achieve the 'CTRL-ALT-DELETE' key-sequence.

Turn off "Sticky Keys". Or, restart your computer to start without the "Accessibility" tools.

How to do an advent 7113 laptop factory reset, tried pressing f10 at start up but not sure what to do after that

hope this helps
  • There are two ways to start the recovery -
    • Restart your computer. Then Press F10 repeatedly until the message "Starting System Recovery" is displayed.
    • In Windows by clicking: Start / All Programs / System Recovery / System Recovery.
  • The recovery will load and display a box with one option:
    • Non-destructive recovery: this option will restore Windows, supplied applications, and drivers. This option will not destroy your documents or programs. These will be backed up along with the registry. These are restored at the end of the recovery process.
To access the recovery options below that erase all data from the computer, click the Advanced button.
    • System Recovery - No format: this will reinstall Windows, supplied applications and drivers. It will move your files to a folder called "My old disk structure". Any applications (except those supplied) will need to be reinstalled.
    • System Recovery - Quick format: this option will erase your hard drive including your personal files. Windows, supplied applications and drivers will be reinstalled.
  • Select the Non-destructive recovery option and press Next.
  • You will be informed about System Restore in Windows, click Yes.
  • The recovery will begin. Once this is complete click Restart.

Numbers& letters on subject line in emails instead of link

i had a similar prob some 1yr bak. bt it was an assembled computer so one of ur problems (if at all it is one) is solved tat it is not ur DELL computer which is malfunctioning.

it may depend upon wat browser u r usin if its IE7, i wud recommend u to uninstall it. better use IE6 only or if not then use mozilla firefox.

and if u r using IE6 then uninstall n reinstall it. remember to restart the pc after every install / uninstall.

u can uninstall n reinstall IE6 by usin the foll:

control panel -> add remove programs (u wil hav to wait for some time) -> add remove windows components -> uncheck the IE6 click next or ok or apply then close it and restart the pc.

after restartin the pc, follow the same procedure only this time to 'check' the IE6. restart the pc again.

it shud do.

thx.

Desktop hp Product Number P6402A

Step 1: Find the current BIOS version number
  1. Turn ON your pc. When the first screen appears, press F1 to enter the BIOS Setup. On certain Compaq Presario PCs (prior to 2002) press the F10 key at the logo screen to enter setup.
  2. The BIOS revision number is listed on the Main menu. Write down the current BIOS version that is listed.
  3. To exit the BIOS setup screen, press F10 , select Yes , and then press the Enter key.

Step 2: Check the Drivers and Downloads page for BIOS or ROM updates

  1. Go to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareRedirector?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=67009&docname=c00007682 enter the model of the PC (for example, Presario 5002US or Pavilion a518d), and click the download button.
  2. Click the link for the PC Operating System (like Windows XP).
  3. Try to find the BIOS update listed under the heading, BIOS , BIOS- System , or RomPaq.
NOTE: The term "Rompaq" refers to BIOS updates for Compaq Presario PCs prior to 2002.
  • If a BIOS update is not listed, HP does not have a BIOS update posted for your PC at this time.
  • If there are several BIOS updates available for different motherboard names, you need to find out what motherboard is installed in your PC. This can be done by turning off the power to the PC, removing the side panel, and reading the name that is printed on the motherboard. The name of your motherboard should match or be similar to the name of the download link.
  • If a BIOS update is listed, proceed to the next step to download and install the BIOS update.
Step 3: Download and install the BIOS update

  1. Click the download link. The instructions for downloading and installing BIOS updates vary.
  • For most PCs with Windows XP, download the file, open it and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • For many PCs before Windows XP, save the downloaded file to the hard drive, insert a formatted disk, open the downloaded file to copy the BIOS files to the disk, and then restart the computer with the disk still in the drive.
  • The instructions on the download page may be different so carefully read and follow the instructions on the download page and in the installation setup screens.
  1. If a 251 or CMOS Checksum error occurs after installing the BIOS update, perform the following steps:
  2. Restart the PC and enter the BIOS screen by pressing the F1 or F10 key at the first screen.
  3. Press the F5 key to load the default BIOS configuration.
  4. Select YES by using the arrow keys, and then press Enter .
  5. Press the F10 key to save the settings and exit.
  6. Select YES by using the arrow keys, and then press Enter .
When the BIOS update is complete, the new BIOS revision number is updated on the Main BIOS screen.
Please rate this solution. Thank you.

Hi I am fairly good with computers but i dont know how to fix this problem. My advent 7113 laptop turns on the power light comes on and they the fan starts but am not sure if the harddisk boots. Then...

It sounds like Either the onboard video card or the LCD controller has gone bad. To verify which one connect a monitor to the VGA adapter on the back of the Laptop. You may also have to hit a key combination to swap displays (Usually <Fn> + <F5> but may be different the keys usually have an offset that indicates its function.

If the Monitor displays the same black and white anomaly then the vid card went bad, if it displays a normal screen your LCD controller is faulty.

Either problem would likely need service from an experienced technician

Hope this helps
