Question about LaCie Big Disk Extreme with Triple Interface - hard drive - 1 TB

La cie hard drive mount issues

All systems have been operating smoothly for the last 2 years. then this morning 1 of my hard drives began having trouble. i have 7 d2 bigger disk extreme terabyte drives and 2 500 gig drives daisy chained together. when i fired up the computer this morning they all turned on and mounted fine excpet for 1 of the drives. it turned on and then went through its normal routine but at a certain point the blue light on the front which usually remains solidly lit began to flicker and the drive started making strange noises. i tried to plug it into other drives and also unmounted the other drives and tried to plug it into the computer by itself. the problem continued. i also tried to use both 400 and 800 cables to see if that would make a difference as well as trying power supplies for one of the other drives. any ideas what is going on? thanks. I have the same issue. I had three LaCie drives daisy-chained together. 2 are 1TB big disk exterme, one was a 250GB LaCie drive. One of the 1 TB drives is only a month old and is somewhat erratic for the past week. Last night it started making horrible noises and now won't mount at all, even when plugged directly to my macbook, my G4 or an XP machine. (I just tried it with every option!). LaCie support is closed until Monday and there is no trouble-shooting section in the manual. The light is flashing rapidly on the drive but the cliking has finally stopped.

I had a similar problem, but was able to swap power supplies with the same 1tb model and the problem followed the power supply.
(Now, I just need the get the power supply brick replaced... *sigh*)

Drive (500gb) is three years old. Worked fine till recently. Makes clicking sound then unmount, or won't mount. Tried different cables (USB/Firewire) with no difference.

I had the same problem and surprisingly, after many attempts to get the drive to mount with different connections, etc., the problem turned out to be the power adapter. If you've got the same kind of adapter on another drive, switch it out and see if your drive shows up. Good luck.

How do i transfer my data from my old la cie 80 gig 107443, to my new la cie 250 gig 300770? both boxes look the same, with the same connections [firewire, usb, 2 others].

Connect both drives to the computer at the same time. If you don't have enough USB ports, connect one to a USB port and the other to a Firewire port. Open a file management window (Explorer in Window, Finder in Mac OS) for each drive. Click and hold the left mouse button (only mouse button on most Mac models in the window for the 80 Gig drive and drag across several folders/files to select them. Release the mouse button, then click on and drag the selected group to the new drive window. When this copy operation is done, repeat with another group of files.

You could select (-A or -A) and drag everything on the old drive at one time, but sometimes the system will bog down on copying large amounts of data (greater than 4-8 GB at a time).

I bought a rikiki go 500GB La cie today, and it's making zooming and loud clicking noises, what's wrong?

Your hard drive is most likely dead, you need to call the manufacturer and have them send you a replacement, the warranty should cover this.

Hello,
your drive has failed at either the power supply level or internal hard drive level.
First, please verify your power supply. When plugged into the power outlet, it should be silent. A defective power supply will hiss or have a high pitch noise to it. If it is defective, replace it and check if the issue is resolved.
If the power supply is silent, one or both of the internal hard drive is failing. If no data is needed, you can either replace the defective one which you will have to isolate by connecting the internal hard drives to a computer or with another enclosure and running a block scan software like hdTune which is free to download. The other option would be to scavenge the healthy drive and use it in another enclosure or inside the computer directly.
If you need the data and the problem was not the power supply, you will need to contact a data recovery center.
Regards,

I have an old La Cie 160gb (maybe 5 years old?) - do you know the specs? rpm, for instance? I need something with 7200. This old one must be 5400, right?

Lacie drives have a 5400 RPM on there 160GB line nothing really changed until 500 GB to 1tB at 7200 RPM.

so the answer is 5400 RPM

Hope this helps please do rate and leave feedback.

Help transferring files from computer hard drive to La Cie

Well you can ONLY transfer/Move DATA as Programs and Documents & Settings and User Directories, cannot be shifted at all. So It is only the Files and Data that can be Moved off a drive. To gain space back, Right Click on the HDD, go to properties, in properties Under the general, tab the first window, select disk cleanup, remove everything in those boxes and after, that look under Tools tab, & do a disk defragment. This may get you space back. If not you may have to get a new bigger drive, and clone your old drive, then install the new drive and reinstall the Cloned image back onto the new drive?
