SOURCE: need to know what kind of aouto matic drive fluid

Most units are sealed and do not require adding fluid. Normall 20w50 engine oil is used. Consult your owners manual or sears.com for confirmation.

SOURCE: Craftsman 15.5 hp 42

It takes 15w-50 or 20w-50 synthetic motor oil.Do not use hydrostatic fluid, it is too thin. Amsoil, Mobil-1, Purple Power or Lucas are four of the most popular brands. You have to suction it out from the plug on top of the transaxle and refill it there also to within 1.5 inch from the top,do not overfill, air is needed in top for expansion.

SOURCE: checking fluid level

most units of this size & quality have a factory sealed transmission. to check or change oil, the transmission would have to be removed.

SOURCE: transmission fluid low, hydrostatic transmission

Quoted from your Owners Manual. . . . .

TRANSAXLE PUMP FLUID
The transaxle was sealed at the factory and fluid maintenance is not required for the life of the transaxle. Should the transaxle ever leak or require servicing, contact your nearest authorized service center/department.

Just changed trans oil in 97 flfts harley trans whining now

Did you use a synthetic trans oil as this is the required oil it must be a 20/50 and did you put 3.5 quarts in which is what the manual says which in fact you only need 3 quarts 3.5 is over filling and cause a wine in the gear box

Peerless tecumseh transmission model mst-206-545c will not drive in gear

FYI I have a Craftsman LT1000 18HP twin opposed Briggs with a Peerless transaxle 206-545c 6 speed manual trans (not the Hydrostatic). I was given this Lawn tractor by a friend who took real good care of it. runs starts great but it started binding in 3rd gear and was very hard to get it out.of gear so by pushing the cluch/brake in and out manytimes and forcing forward into 4,5,6 gears I was able to get it out of 3rd.

Iam a mechanic and have over 30 years experience.so I decided to research the Peerless 206-545c transmission I found some great info online and helpful repair vids on youtube. I decided to post here to try and help people that are having the same issue with this trans. after I got the tractor in the garage I noticed the left rear wheel was wet on the inside with gear oil.so I decided to do a rebuild.after learning about this transmission.I went to sears parts direct.com and put in my craftsman mower model number and it came up with a exploded view of the tecumseh\peerless 206-545c. on the diagram. I found the 2 transaxle seals needed item# 157 and for like 15 bucks ordered them. you can order all the seals if you choose.

I realized that there is a fill PLUG ONLY and no drain plug on the bottom of transmission.you must take this transmission out of the tractor and lay it upside down in a oil catch pan and drain the fluid out. you must open the transmission all the way to replace the transaxle seals.Im told that most lawn tractors of today have disposable transmissions.another words they dont want you to fix them youreself they want you to bring it in so they can charge you to diagnose it and say yep you need a new transmission. lol thats why no drain plug.so if youre not a mechanic you gonna be payin boy..

I did find alot of BAD info in doing research on this transmission online ie: people posted wrong info saying that you just have to loosen all bolts on the trans case and you can put new seals in... VERY WRONG and the other wrong info was the amount of gear oil. the correct amount of 80w90w is 32oz 2/3 full from top(use a dowl or straw to measure. I use LUCAS high Performance. gear oil. I included a Tecumseh/Peerless link for you to check out. http://www.smallenginesuppliers.com/html/engine- specs/tecumseh/Tecumseh_Transaxle_Service_Information.pdf scroll down to MST 200 series trans find the 206 545c documentation and it tells you every thing you need to know about the 206-545c ie 90/100 inch pounds when torqing bolts on case. shifting adjustment (ball hex screw adjustment) 1 full turn after flush with housing.etc. I was able to save this transmission I opened it up and cleaned every gear by hand with Seafoam trans cleaner and put it all back together using permatex (GEAR OIL GASKET MAKER) and waa laa it shifts amazing and no more leaking from axle seal. I get no benefit from posting this just want other people to have the correct info and for around 40 bucks you can recondition this trans.if you open it up and find broken gear or gears go to ebay or sears and get parts which ever fits your buget.it took about 6 hours total to de install transmission and clean gears and put new seals and re install back into the tractor. just to give you a time frame. if you dont have time to rebuild it go to ebay there are used complete transmissions there but I would rather know what I have by doing it myself than buying used that may have the same issue and cost ya 200 bucks.

I have a 15.5 h.p. lawn tracctor with a hydrostatic transmission. I bought it from an older gentleman who serviced it religiously. It is a 2005. The transmission whines some which I understand is normal,...

Most hydrostats have a internal, or external disc brake it is very important that the brake is not adjusted too tight, follow the linkage from the foot pedal to the gearbox, slacken off the brake rod, so as when you put the hrdro in bypass ( push mode ) you can push it easily, if you cannot oush it the brakes are definatley binding.

Transmission

The automatic trans. uses ATF trans. fluid . The manual uses gear oil. The spout to check the oil is located on the side of the trans. right behind the radiator.
