Question about Black & Decker Leaf Hog 12-AMP Electric Blower/Vacuum #BV4000

My black and decker leafhog blower/vac smells like something is burning

My leaf blower at times has smelled like there was something burning inside the housing. Recently, the plug affixed to the housing, started to turn black and eventually sunk into the housing. I took it apart today and changed out the factory plug set-up with the male end of an extension cord. Amazingly, i got it all back together and the blower works when i tested it! The bad news is that i can see what looks like sparks through the vent holes in the housing of the blower. I am not sure if they are actually sparks, but it does not look good. Any suggestions? Thx.

Same exact problem. On of the prongs broek off and melted down a portion of the extension cord. I hate to throw this out and would be interested in repairing the unit. Assume that a professional repair would cost twice the purchase price.

same problem here, it melted the female plug. I was looking to find a service manual online to take it properly apart (and then be able to put it back together).

I had the burning smell and sparks occur a few weeks ago but I haven't tried replacing the plug yet. One prong retracted itself into the housing and became wobbly, and the blower won't work at all

Black and Decker has issued a recall notice for Type 1 BV4000 because "a loose connection between the unit and an extension cord can create heat, posing a possible fire hazard" Says to STOP USING and call 1-866-853-2138 to arrange for free repair. (Found info by Googling "Black and Decker Leafhog", navigate to Black and Decker website and click "Important Safety Recalls" button at bottom of page.)

My leaf blower was working fine and then all of a sudden it stopped working

Try a different outlet, maybe the ground fault interrupter tripped on the circuit.

Electrical burning smell

I had one like this. The problem is probably something wrapped around the blower. You may have injested anything from string to a piece of plastic.

I need to get a replacement power switch for a LH4500 blower/vac. Any suggestions ?

Well, B & D only offer the run of the mill parts for this model.

These guys only have a selection of general parts also. Sorry. Techs consider these tools "disposable" and even the manufacturer and parts suppliers treat it as such.

Older leafhog don't know how to change over to blower instead of vacuum model Bv2500

Remove the vacuum tube completely from the bottom of the machine and make sure the impeller cover closes completely. Remove the collection bag off of the blower outlet. Now attatch the blower tube to that outlet on the blower. Done.

first check your sparks plug, if it was never replaced it needs it. next check your air filter, if its clogged and dirty it needs cleaning. let me know if you have any questions about my answer or if these arent the problems, thanks

Black and Decker leaf hog, worked fine last use.

I posted this solution on another similar thread, but it may pertain here.
I have this unit. Mine stopped working today after being warm on the handle the last few uses. I opened the unit up (torx 15) and smelled, then found that a fused wire coming off the motor had burned/melted/separated at a plastic plug right inside the handle. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with it, but in this same compartment of the handle there was an anti-theft strip floating around. I called BandD and they said the BV4000 type ONE has been recalled.
