I have a Dell Desktop running xp, my sound works but when I tried to hook up my new HP Premium Stereo headset the mic refuses to record sound. In playback the Microphone is not even available to be checked.

    Hi Scott,

well lets see...I have three ports on the back of my pc for this...from left to right...pink (mike) green (speaker) and blue...(I don't know what that is). My device managers states that everything is working find. So no to flagged entries. I also found out that IDT Audio control panel is somehow involved...this is so annoying me right now.

    THanks for trying!

Have you try with another Headset if you have?? May be the connector gone bad. Let me know in either case before vote solution.

How many connector are present on your PC? Do you found any Flagged entry in Device manager?

Since if the sound works with plug in same connector, may be the newly purchased Headset not compatible or may be malfunctioning.. Try to run some other audio file or video file and try it with both (Headset and other audio device you have)

How do i turn on a microphone on my computer

Hi,try right clicking on the little speaker near the clock (bottom right corner of your desk top) Look for Recording Devices,if its there, left click it.A window should open, select the type of microphone you have pluged in ie.Realtek High Definition Audio.
Left click Microphone once, then left click configure (bottom left corner) A new window should pop up,left click Set up microphone, slect headset or desktop microphone and click next. You should get a Microphone setup wizard, just click the next button,at this point you should be speaking into your mic, read the line in a normal voice.click next, click the finish button.I hope this has helped, here is a web link to some support documentation for your system
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx260/en/index.htm

Another way to get to your sound settings.
Open Control Panel and look for Hardware and Sound.Left click it,under the heading Sound look for Manage audio devices and left click that.A window will open called Sound,in the tabs look for Recording and left click that.Select Microphone (left click once) and left click configure, bottom left.A new window opens, left click Set up microphone.Left click Headset or Desktop Microphone and click next, click next again, now read the lines in a normal voice and click next when done. Now click Finished.Thats it your done.Hope this has helped, don't forget to rate

Cant get the mic to work on my dell , using xp. whats the deal

Open volume control.
When the box with all the sliders opens up click on OPTIONS (top left)
Click PROERTIES
Tick RECORDING then clck OK
The slider box will swap to the RECORDING slider box
Select the one you want to use as the recording SOURCE and put a tick in the box at the bottom. (in your case MIC)
You can also set the recording level here too. (1/2 way is a good starting point)
Now click OPTIONS once again
Then PROPERTIES
Now tick PLAYBACK and then OK
You should now be back in the normal playback slider box
Whilst you were in the properties for either recordeing or playback you may have noticed a list of devices to show then as sliders tick them as needed

Dell 840, hedset doesnt work. I've changed windows but nothing happen for headset.

fist check the mute button on the headset, ive had mine muted several times and forgot =P. now go into your sound properties menu, and gor to the "recording" area. make sure that all devices are enabled (line in , mic, cd, ect...) now that youve done that a mixer will pop up. uncheck the mute button for mic in, and select the box under it to make it the primary input device. turn it up. then make sure in the device list that "stereo mix" is not checked. this should solve your problem.

Computer doesn't recognise the microphone

What did you use to clean the registry? Some registry cleaning programs have a backup file to restore what was "cleaned". If you have the backup, try restoring from the program. A system restore in Windows might also repair the damage. Good luck!

Audio format

In control panel, make sure that the mic is properly configured in audio devices (They don't always get assigned properly) so that the correct device is set for recording.

You can test the mic in sound recorder (Just type sound on the search bar, it should appear in the list)
