click start Control panel administrative tools computer management device manager scroll to cd/dvd rom drives + to expand could be a yellow question or exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click update drivers

you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd rom then plug them back in this will activate found new hardware wizard

you need only do the registry check if you cant see the drive/s in windows explorer/my computer

to check the registry
Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone. If your computer came with a motherboard disk the drivers could be on it
if you dont have motherboard disk you will need to download the drivers

Vista does not recognize HP dvd 1260i. I have a yellow exclamation in device manager.

Double-click that YELLOW mark. What do you see?
Click "Reinstall driver", and see if that resolves the problem.

I am running windows 7 (upgraded from Vista which came on the machine at purchase). My dvd drive stopped working suddenly and it won't allow me to reinstall the driver. (hl-dt-st dvdram gsa-t20n ata device...

The Code 10 error code is generated when Device Manager has insufficient information or the error that is bubbled up by the device drivers is not recognized by Device Manager. Additionally, this error may occur when one of the drivers that the device needs does not start.
The Code 10 error pertains mainly to hardware and device driver issues or to compatibility issues.
Did you try Windows Update? You need to configure it so it looks for drivers as well.(is not by default).
It's strange since most drivers for Vista will work for Windows 7.
Another thing you can do is update and uninstall the driver, and restarting... that should take of it. I hope this helps. Please let us know if you solved the problem and do not forget to rate and provide positive feedback for our fast-free support today. Thank you :D

Hi Rizi
You try to reinstall it using the reinstall driver tab in the properties of the hardware.
