try to boot the computer, if you hear the start up sound then mobo is not bad. this issue could be caused due to boot sector viruses as well. see if the back light turns on ..
check the settings in bios and try to run a recovery. if neither helps

remove the battery and unplug your power chord for 1 min. then plug your power chord back in and try to turn it back on.
if it works then plug your battery back in and see if it boots your system up without the power chord.
if everything works fine then go into your control panel and change your power options.
If the light on the pc, not the power supply is orange this usually means the pc is not comming out of sleep mode. Try the obvious and restart it. If that does not work, attempt starting in safe mode and go to your control panel and turn off all power saving, screen saver, and sleep mode options.
It's very possible you have motherboard issues. Hardware failures will often resemble the machine being stuck in "sleep mode". You can try a power "reset" in case it is stuck in sleep mode. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. If successful, the machine will boot (probably in safe mode) and you should be able to re-configure your power settings to disable sleep mode. If this doesn't work, you most likely have hardware issues and the motherboard is most likely the culprit.
First advice would have been to remove battery, but since you did that, I'd say that your laptop is stuck in hybrid-sleep, or the old hibernate. Try pressing the power button for 10-15 seconds, the laptop should go off, then try presing the power button again, for normal boot.
