So then are you trying to put in two more 512s for a total of 2 gig or are you putting in two 1 gigs for a total of 3 gigs? One other thing to make sure of: all the ram should be the same type (SDRAM, DRAM, DDR SDRAM, etc and have the same speed (800 mhz, etc). check this and if they do not match, that may be your problem. Let me know what the size of each individual stick of ram that you are putting in.

Oh, are you adding two 2 gigs with the two 512 megs to get a total of 5 gigs?

Take the new ram and put it in the old ram slots without putting in the old ram.

I have emachine with 1 gig ram want to add another gig

Try using memory store dot com. They have a small executable that will discover and tell you exactly what you need. Or you could use their search. Both work fine. This is just a suggestion, but other sites may have the same features. GL

Wont boot 2 windows xp home when 2 gig memory installed, works with 1 gig, tried both slots with both 1 gig sticks.Screen goes black.

Seems the memory is not comatable with the motherboard. Replace the old memory and visit http://www.crucial.com, they have a scanner tool which will confirm what mem can be installed.
