Seems like a sensor somewhere is clogged. It is permanently thinking the rug is dirty.

I have the same problem, the red dirt sensor is stuck on and wont shut off.

  • Bobo3497 Jan 10, 2009

Have had machine since July 2007, so after 1.5 years my dirt sensor won't go off either. This makes vacuuming that much more "work" as the unit is heavier when it is working harder. Gosh yeah plz, is there a simple solution for this?

  • Anonymous Mar 08, 2009

I changed the bag a few times. My fiancee doesn't watch the lights but I definitely do. Now it seems that my 'guiding light' is stuck. I'm just looking for a way to reset it.

There is an optical sensor inside the port where you attach your vacuum bag. Take the bag off and take a clean soft cloth and wipe inside the port to remove dirt from the sensor. Don't wet it! Do this every time you change your bag and you shouldn't have a problem.

Try cleaning the dirt sensor and clean the inside of the tube that goes into the bag with a damp cloth. It wont hurt anything it will continue to work

Try cleaning out all the pathways you can get to. Trapped particles can mess up this indicator. Particularly check the extra mesh filter that is under the bag (there's a plastic grid that snaps over it to hold it into place). Clean that out and make sure the bag is securely in place.

You can test the board by crossing the 2 connectors to "close" the circuit for the mic (small black and blue wire) while vac is running and light should go to red every time you complete the circuit. WARNING: There will be exposed electrical points on board that could cause an electrical shock!!! or damage to board if not just crossing mic connections.

check to make sure the settings didn't get inadvertently switched to the hi position, move the switch back and forth from high to reg a few times, then leave it on reg.

remove and hand wash the primary filter and secondary filter, dry throughly and replace them in the vacuum.

if none of this works, you will need to have the vacuum serviced, or if it is still working, just don't pay attention to the dirt-finder. the dirt sensor on your vacuum is located in the suction tube and is generally not accessible enough to clean without taking the vacuum apart.

hope this helps,

Where is the "dirt sensor" in the upright

If you look at the rear of the machine you will see where the hose attaches to it's fitting. At the bottom of the hose connector you will see a "bump". This is where the dirt sensor microphone is located. To cure a sensor stuck on red, remove the entire rear panel, and you will see the mike. Push around it's edges with a small screwdriver to firmly seat it, and your sensor should work properly. It may not seem as if you're doing anything, but it usually works.

Uh70015 dirt sensor stays on green. Goes on red for about 5 seconds then green. Can clearly see the floor is dirty and it is picking up stuff.

ahh the good ol electronics on vacuums selling the product again...

not to worry, your feature is working properly, your vacuum is working fine too.

Imagine if you will making a circle with your pointer finger and your thumb. Now put a string or thread across in a straight line there. The string would be the size of the beam of light that the sensor uses. Your finger and thumb are about the size of the tube that the dirt and dust is passing by. Unless the dirt passes and cuts through the beam of light, then it will register. otherwise if it passes around the beam of light, the sensor thinks your carpet is clean.

The opposite sometimes will happen too where it will stay constant red. That means that the sensor is completely covered in dirt and will not register anymore.

Hope this helps.

The red sensor light is stuck on red. I have cleaned the filters. What might be the problem?

a common problem with this unit is that the sensor will clog up with dirt and debris and will give a false reading to you. my best advice is just to ignore the sensor light... mostly because your machine is running and it will not affect the performance of the machine. Next time you have the unit in for a service, let the repair person know and they should be able to clean it for you.

Good luck.

Hoover vacuum cleaner indicators stuck

the sensor is located in the tube that the bag mounts to, if you take the bag off of the unit and have an air compressor handy you can blow out the port hole this should dislodge the particulates that are causing the false reading, there is defintely a clog in the system. let me know if this helps thanks Don the Vacuum Doctor Alb, N.M.

Embedded dirt finder light stuck

The Hoover uses a small microphone that is positioned in the plastic housing that the end of the hose fits into, just behind the bag compartment. What happens is that when dirt comes up the hose and hits the 90 degree corner, just before it enters the bag, the microphone picks up the sound and transmits that info to the electonics that controls the lights. Sometimes the microphone will stick and the red light will stay lit. If you take a screwdriver and give the microphone area a sharp tap with the handle of the screwdriver, this will often jar the microphone and it will begin working again. If not, it may need to be replaced. NOTE: this function does not affect the cleaning efficiency of the vacuum. Your vacuum will still work normally whether the dirt sensor is working or not. It is a totally unrelated function to the vacuum itself.

The sensor may be bad, or it may be coated over with dirt. Re,ove the hose at the back of the vacuum, the head of the sensor is down inside that opening, reach in there and clean it off and see it that corrects the problem, if not replace the sensor.
