The VCR player works just fine. DVD plays audio, but I cannot see a picture because Progressive Scan Mode remains on the screen. SETUP displays on the "window" when I use the remote, but there is no setup menu displayed on the tv.... it just keeps saying Progressive Scan Mode. Also, the audio is in a foreign language. I have lost my manual. I tried a suggestion make elsewhere in FixYa to hold the Stop button for 5 seconds. The DVD DOES stop playing, but the Progressive Scan Mode continues to be displayed.
I had the exact same problem (was moving the system from the Big Screen HD in the basement into the bedroom) and was stuck on Progressive mode, as the bedroom TV did not have HD inputs. The way to fix it is to hold STOP for 5 seconds, but NOT on the remote. Instead hold STOP for 5 seconds on the actual front panel of the system.
I did this and it worked no problem for me.

This solution will also work for GoldStar DVR1000! make sure no DVD or tapes are in the player press and hold stop button and it releases you from Progressive scan mode. After searching the web for hours for this model got desperate and was trying fixes for other brands and models, this one worked. Thanks koolanit
I looked up the model number you gave for your unit and Zenith says theres no such model. Go to the Zenith link and insert the complete model number to get an owners manual for free. Good Luck http://www.zenithservice.com/
No more solutions are necessary! THANK YOU koolanit! I have an old "go video" DVD/VCR player that mysteriously ended up on Progressive Scan Mode for a week. I was just about to throw it out forever, when I read your solution.

Excellent solution!!! Making sure there was no DVD in player and then holding the STOP button for 5 seconds did indeed do the trick. I appreciate all of your ratings for this because it really helped!! T
