Nikon shutters are typically good for 100,000 trips...do you think you've taken that many pics?

How do I set shutter speed to photograph without a flash

You can take the photograps at P mode while keeping the flash off. In this mode the camera will set the speed and the appature according to the available light. This may slow down the speed so make sure you keep the camera stable.

My Nikon D50 is suddenly underexposing the lower half of each photo. Does anyone know what is wrong?

Are these flash photos? If so, make sure you don't have the lens hood on. Also make sure the shutter speed is slower than the sync speed.

Otherwise, is this happening at a variety of shutter speeds? With fresh batteries?

Hi - I just replied to your other request re the same problem.

I think your shutter is not operating properly. This should be repaired by an expert not a home handyman.

The way a shutter works is that there are 2 curtains. The first one opens to allow light onto the film/sensor plane and is followed by a timed gap by the second curtain to shut out the light.

Your symptoms could be either a sticky second shutter, or less likely a faulty sensor.

As said in the other response - get a quote for repairs and work out if it is more economical to repair the camera or buy a new one. Is it still under Warranty?

Sorry I can't give a quick fix answer.

Good luck with it.

Nikon D50 Autofocus

MaiaM,

I am having a similar problem with my D50's shutter. My problem seems to be related to the position of the camera. If I rotate the camera vertically to the left - it functions fine. Rotated to the right - it acts as is as if the shutter button is not working at all. Horizontally positioned - the shutter works about 85%of the time. Is your problem positionally influenced as well?
