I have the same problem. Water heater operates on a very simple principle. of thermo-mechanical feed-back and response. In my case, I have a Kenmore Power Miser 6, NG heater with an electronic pilot ignition system. The heater is just over one year old and last month (conveniently just after the 12 month service warranty expired) the pilot light started extinguishing on a very regular basis. I find it interesting that the very problem I am experiencing, is happening to other Kenmore owners (victims). The solution can be found in replacing one of two possible components; the pilot assembly or the gas valve manifold. The price of DIY pilot assembly replacement is approx. $60 . The valve component is significantly higher. Water heaters are designed and built to provide years of trouble-free reliable service. This is the first Kenmore product I have owned. From a customer perspective, with regard to product performance, Sears/Kenmore needs to take a strong look at their supplier quality. Oh, by the way, contacting Sears for remedial relief only managed to frustrate and infuriate me. You see, I am in Quality for a world-class aircraft company. I understand what ethical steps are required to satisfy a valued customer. I plan on ripping out the defective unit this weekend and replacing it with a reliable Home depot special. At least with HD, if the heater fails to perform , I can return it. Hey Sears in Chicago, don't come crying to the consumer when you are looking for the trendy "bail out". This problem is due to the gas control valve going out. Good luck getting help from sears, you can buy the part from them for like $90, then you will also probably have to buy the pilot assembly (around $30) or the whole burner assembly with pilot (around $66).. so in the end, you might spend up to 180 after shipping, or if you like, you can have them overnight it for about $50 extra. The best solution I came up with was to buy a new whirlpool waterheater from lowes, and buy the lowes 11 year guarantee for $90 and then dont buy another thing from Sears except the craftsman tools.

I too have a Sears water heater and after several years of use the pilot light would not stay lit for more than 15 - 30 minutes. My problem was that the water heater was not getting enough air, so the flame went out. Here what I did. First be sure your water heater is off. Then remove the dust cover at the base of the water heater and vacuum inside the base of the water heater. The air inlets can clog easily, and a flame has to have air. This solved my problem. My pilot has not gone out in over a year, and I didn't have to pay sears to replace parts that didn't need replacing.

Apartment owner and have had numerous water heaters go out just after warranty. Was advised to blow and **** out all dust from under and make sure the screen is clean. Done that, didn't work. Changed pilot assembly and gas valves, didn't work. This I am finding has been a problem for a few years now. Has anyone have any new info on why these keep going out????

IT CAN be a breathing problem related to clogged filters, BUT ALSO
can be FIXED by reducing the gas pressure to the unit by slightly
turning the knife switch so the gas isn't so "full blast". The pilot light
actually goes out when the unit turns off and stops heating and the
air flow then is violent. Less violent flames, less air needed, stays lit.
Yes, and clean filters too! THIS WORKS AND IS SOOOOO EASY!

Hi, Its most likly you have a draft problem. Take a thin strip of paper and put it where the pilot light is.If it moves, thats your problem. Let me know if this is not the problem.

My Kenmore Power Miser 9 pilot light kept going out. It would light right up and when I turned the gas valve to "on" the burner took right off. A short time later everything would be off again and cold water. I read about this screen getting plugged. Its in the garage and there were mega cob webs and dust under there. A few swipes with a swiffer dusting tail for ceiling fan blades and its been good for 2 weeks now.

What pilot light assy. do I need to buy for model# 640y0rt4, water heater ??? please wont stay lit

check that the flame sensor is clean. It would be a stiff piece of wire that would sit right over where the pilot lite is. If it is dirty...it wont sense if there is a flame....and if it dosnt sense a flame....it wont let the pilot lite to turn on.

Why does my pilot light on my hot water take not stay lite

It depends on many factors, including brand, type of heater, age, gas pressure, maintenance, venting, proper installation of thermocouple, bad thermocouple, air intake cleaning, if the flame is clear blue etc.

Reliance 606 Hot water Heating element (Pilot light) won't stay lit

Gas water heaters don't have elements, so I am confused about what type water heater you have..
Look on the side of tank for the label.
Find the brand, and type. Does it show BTUs? Or does it show wattage?
Then re-post question with this information, for best possible answer.
Also post question on Tank forum.

How do i reignite a worcester 24i combi boiler ?

I looked up this unit for you and found out it is a hot water system. She needs to get to the main gas valve to light the pilot. This unit has what is called a thermocouple on it that keeps the pilot on, even when the boiler shuts down. Its just a matter of lighting the pilot light. There should be a metal plate with the directions on it at the gas valve to lite it. You will have a knob, more then likely red or black in color on top of the valve. It will say on, off, and pilot. It should be in the on position now. Turn it to pilot. Have some matches with you and a flashlight if you can. You will need to look back into the burner area to where your pilot light will be. The thermocouple is a copper colored tubing that runs right back to the pilot, as it has to get hot from the pilot flame to work. To start, depending on how far back you have to reach with the match, you may need to use a piece of solid cardboard rolled up, a small piece to light it and reach in. Turn the knob to pilot. Now, push down on the knob and hold it down. This lets gas get back to the pilot, so you must keep it down and light it at the same time. Once it is lite, you have to hold it down for at least a minute. Slowly release it, very slow. The flame should then stay on. Once it is on, turn the gas knob to on. With the thermostat set to come on, it will fire up and heat the water. If the pilot will not stay lite after you hold it down for 1 minute, and keeps going out, the thermocouple will need to be replaced. It is the copper line that screws into the gas valve and goes back to the pilot. You can get them at any hardware store for around $6.00. Maybe you can help her install it. It is very simple to do. I believe the pilot just blew out and she will need to light it. Just follow what I have told you, and she will get it lite. Good Luck to you.

I light the piuolot button and when i let go of the pilot button the pilot goes out does not light burner wont stay lit

When you light the pilot lite you have to hold the button down until it gets the element hot enough to stay lit. If you hold down the button and lite the pilot and let it go right away it will go out. What to do is hold down the button and lite the pilot and continue to hold the buttn down for about 45 seconds to a minute then let it up very slowly and you will see if it is going to go out by the flame getting smaller as you let up on the button. If it does start to get smaller conitnue to hold it again for a few seconds and repeat the process of letting it up slowly. when the control element gets to the right temperature it will stay lit then turn your valve to "ON" and the fire will start up and continue to heat the water.

Rheem NatGas hot water heater model 41V50, basement flooded pilot went our how do I relight?

At the controls there should be a knob that says " Pilot"... "ON" Turn the knob to pilot and hold it down while lighting the pilot lite. Keep holding it down until it gets warm enough that when you leave it up the pilot stays on. Once the pilot lite stays on on it's own turn it to on.

Installed new thermocoupler heater still will not stay lite

Make sure the pilot light is hitting the thermocoupler, even when burner kicks in. Sometimes a dirty pilot tube will cause a weak pilot and it wont continuely hit the thermocoupler. I use air to clean mine. Hope this helps.

By controler I am guessing you mean gas valve? The next step, and I am not sure the water heater age rates this ,is to replace the gas valve.
