Question about Water Heaters
Pilot light will not stay lite
I have the same problem. Water heater operates on a very simple principle. of thermo-mechanical feed-back and response. In my case, I have a Kenmore Power Miser 6, NG heater with an electronic pilot ignition system. The heater is just over one year old and last month (conveniently just after the 12 month service warranty expired) the pilot light started extinguishing on a very regular basis. I find it interesting that the very problem I am experiencing, is happening to other Kenmore owners (victims). The solution can be found in replacing one of two possible components; the pilot assembly or the gas valve manifold. The price of DIY pilot assembly replacement is approx. $60 . The valve component is significantly higher. Water heaters are designed and built to provide years of trouble-free reliable service. This is the first Kenmore product I have owned. From a customer perspective, with regard to product performance, Sears/Kenmore needs to take a strong look at their supplier quality. Oh, by the way, contacting Sears for remedial relief only managed to frustrate and infuriate me. You see, I am in Quality for a world-class aircraft company. I understand what ethical steps are required to satisfy a valued customer. I plan on ripping out the defective unit this weekend and replacing it with a reliable Home depot special. At least with HD, if the heater fails to perform , I can return it. Hey Sears in Chicago, don't come crying to the consumer when you are looking for the trendy "bail out". Signed- "Burned Out" in La Habra, California.

This problem is due to the gas control valve going out. Good luck getting help from sears, you can buy the part from them for like $90, then you will also probably have to buy the pilot assembly (around $30) or the whole burner assembly with pilot (around $66).. so in the end, you might spend up to 180 after shipping, or if you like, you can have them overnight it for about $50 extra. The best solution I came up with was to buy a new whirlpool waterheater from lowes, and buy the lowes 11 year guarantee for $90 and then dont buy another thing from Sears except the craftsman tools.

I too have a Sears water heater and after several years of use the pilot light would not stay lit for more than 15 - 30 minutes. My problem was that the water heater was not getting enough air, so the flame went out. Here what I did. First be sure your water heater is off. Then remove the dust cover at the base of the water heater and vacuum inside the base of the water heater. The air inlets can clog easily, and a flame has to have air. This solved my problem. My pilot has not gone out in over a year, and I didn't have to pay sears to replace parts that didn't need replacing.

Apartment owner and have had numerous water heaters go out just after warranty. Was advised to blow and **** out all dust from under and make sure the screen is clean. Done that, didn't work. Changed pilot assembly and gas valves, didn't work. This I am finding has been a problem for a few years now. Has anyone have any new info on why these keep going out????

IT CAN be a breathing problem related to clogged filters, BUT ALSO
can be FIXED by reducing the gas pressure to the unit by slightly
turning the knife switch so the gas isn't so "full blast". The pilot light
actually goes out when the unit turns off and stops heating and the
air flow then is violent. Less violent flames, less air needed, stays lit.
Yes, and clean filters too! THIS WORKS AND IS SOOOOO EASY!

My Kenmore Power Miser 9 pilot light kept going out. It would light right up and when I turned the gas valve to "on" the burner took right off. A short time later everything would be off again and cold water. I read about this screen getting plugged. Its in the garage and there were mega cob webs and dust under there. A few swipes with a swiffer dusting tail for ceiling fan blades and its been good for 2 weeks now.
