    Shrekb,

Can you at least tell me what you are trying to power? Can you determine the voltage and amps you need?

Note down the power supply wattate and voltage from the
power supply pack. remove the power supply unit from the
main supply.. see if any breakage in the line . test this if u have
multimeter. If u feel that the wires and cables are ok.
the pin which gets inserted into the external hard disk may be
broken. it can be verified by just shaking smoothly on all directions. rest solution after seeing your reply

My External HDD's adapter blow and i want to know if any 12v adapter will make it work?

Be careful, not all 12 Volt adaptors are the same. Some put out AC voltage and others DC. You need a 12 V DC adaptor. The adaptors are polralized, that is one output wire is + 12 V and the other is - 12V.. If you connect it backwards you can blow your hard drive.
If your not sure regarding correct polarity, consult a technician who knows how to use a voltmeter.
Also, the current rating of the replacement adaptor must be equal to or greater than the currenr rating of the original. Example: Old adaptor = 375 Ma. , New adaptor = 750 Ma. This would be OK.

Dear Sir/ Madam, I have TWO Western Digital USB

first of all , you are looking at the wrong voltages. The important voltage is the DC OUTPUT, which is the voltage the external harddrives use AND the polarity of the plug attached to the harddrive end of the cable.
if both the harddrives have say 12v dc output and both have the insignia of the center conductor being + (posative) then you can interchange them. and you CAN run a 9volt unit with 12volt DC power, but not the other way around.
Look at your power adaptors again for the OUTPUT and polarity.
should be a half-circle with lines depicting the polarity(+,-) of the center and sheild connections to the hard drives printed on both the harddrives and the power adaptors . This can also be tested with a dc volt meter while the adaptors are plugged into the wall.
DO NOT try to test the AC end while plugged in!!

By SEPARATE I am taking that to mean an external drive and not an internal mounted drive. If IT IS external the same power supply should work fine as the drive motors are the same in both models. IF IT IS Internal then the question is whether your power supply is molex or ATA.

No external drive icon on desk top

This happened to me as well - i have been reading that it could be the power supply adaptor. If you can try another one - it might solve the problem. The adaptors seem to either be faulty or made to stop working. Great news for us the consumer!!

Getting files off an old IBM TravelStar 20 GB Hard Drive

You can buy an adaptor that will connect your hard drive to a pc.
Ribbon cable from your secondary drive on pc goes into the adapator. Adaptor also coonects to laptop harddrive.
You also need to change from being a master driveto be a slave drive . see linkbelow.

http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/tva/tvajum.htm

You can then copy file to pc a usb memory stick.
