My wife's laptop has an intermittent black/dark screen issue. Sometimes it will turn on and run fine but other times it will boot to windows loading screen then go dark for no apparent reason. The only cure I have found thus far is to reboot when this occurs. In some cases it will work fine for an hour or two and then the fault will reoccur when the laptop is left downloading updates for example. Yet again the only way to resolve it seems to reboot. Can any one help she is driving me crazy with it!!!

This is caused by the small battery inside that keeps the time and date for the computer. If it is dead, you get the message you refer to. Sometimes they are easy to change, sometimes it is quite a hassle. If you go to setup, you can change the time and date for that session, but the next time it will be off again.
Thinkpad R31 is a pretty old model so you should expect some screen fade over time. This is usually caused by a failing flourescent backlight. A new screen will fix the problem unless you think you are up for a direct light tube replacement. This is tricky work and you can shatter your screen if you aren't experienced enough. Fortunately for you though, these screens are pretty cheap on Ebay.
there could be a lose wire to you display card mine gets red lines some times and if i hit the right side a few times it goes away and it works fin after so idk if it will work 4 you but it does for me.
I don't mean to disagree with my associate, but DVD players for R series (or T, A, etc) can be found for less than 20.00 US (Ebay is a good example)
For that matter, we've got at least a dozen at our shop which we sell for 25.00
Installation is very simple as well, just pop the old drive out, put the new drive in.
