Question about Harman Kardon AVR 235 Receiver

Open Question

Harmon Kardon AVR 235 wont power on at all. Stays only in standby mode.

My HK AVR 235 wont stay on. The orange standby light shows and when i press the power button to turn it on, it only clicks (relay) but doesnt turn on. No display or sound show up at all. I also noticed the blue LED on the power button is dull. Please help.

Ive tried unplugging it, the reset but with no luck.

Mine does the same thing. If you look into the top of the receiver through the grate on the far left side, you see a tiny little button. Reach in and press the button with something (not metal). This will reset the unit. Sometimes you have to do it a few times and mess with the power switch at the same time. Pain in the ****. I'm getting new reciever and never buying HK again.

CHECK YOUR WIRING!!! I have had problems from time to time, generally after re-arranging, and have found speaker wires slightly touching on 1 channel caused my AVR to give similar problems. GOOD LUCK!!!

SOURCE: cannot get dts from my Harmon Kardon AVR 300 via my Blue Ray

I'm not sure if this solution is still necessary however:

I own a H/K AVR300 and have a PS3 hooked up via HDMI to the TV and Optical TOSLink to the receiver. I have no troubles selecting between DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1. I can even select trueHD whatever format but I can't detect an audible difference, I think that mode might be downgraded back to regular DD5.1...

Hope this helps...

Ensure that your speakers are connected to the terminals that you have your speaker selector switch turned to.
Then check that you have your device, whether it be a CD or DVD player, or turntable, plugged into the correct input and that you also have the correct input selected on the receiver.

SOURCE: AVR amber light will not return to blue after

There is an internal reset switch mounted on the transformer board. Open the unit, look at the boards attached to the transformer, the pushbutton is facing up. Measure the voltage on the 2 pins of the switch. If it is a logic low, the switch is partially shorted. Replace the switch or just cut the jumper wire just below thw switch. When this switch fails, it constantly resets the receiver and stops it from powering up. It does not fix a protection mode problem.

My Cox HD/DVR controller will turn off but will not turn on my new HKAVR1700 using the AUX button on the Cox supplied URC-8820-Cisco remote.

This is a documented problem with the Harmon/Kardon AVR-1700 and the Cox remote. Here's how I solved it. On the HK1700, go to System Settings and turn on HDMI Link. This will allow your TV (if it has the feature) to put the HK in standby mode when you power down the TV. Go to your setting on your TV and turn on HDMI link, or equivalent. I have a Sony TV and the setting is called "Control For HDMI." Then, use code 0110 for your Cox remote. This code will only turn on the HK, not turn it off. BUT, the HDMI Link should put the HK into standby.

I have an Harmon Kardon AVR 85 and the power will not come on. The batteries are good in the remote, I have unplugged and plugged the unit back in, but the red light stays on and will not power up. How...

First of all, if you have just been powering up with the remote, try pushing the actual button on the unit. From owning a HK receiver, I found out that if the power switch is out, it will not turn on from the remote. Duh moment when I discovered this.
It also might be an internal fuse or circuit breaker that is shorted or tripped. If there is not an outside breaker or fuse, send this to a repair person. Sometimes there are capacitors in the power amp circuit that can hold a lot of voltage for a good length of time. You could get shocked. So, you might want to let the repairman handle this. Otherwise check for an outside breaker or fuse, and replace if needed.
You can also check Harmon Kardon's site for customer support.

Wont stay on.

The only way you can fix this is you have the proper tools and have very good soldering skills. If so, I will post more instructions on how to fix this.

It has a blown channel, it can not be fixed without some good troubleshooting skills. The protect mode is so you don't cause more damage to it. If you continue to turn it on, you may cause more damage.

Your best bet is to take it in to get repaired at a service center.

Let me know if you require more help,

Dave
