Question about Compaq Presario 2140US Notebook

Can't boot up laptop

I have been unable to boot up my laptop. When I turn it on, the screen is black (it looks like it's off, not like a "lit up" black) and the hard drive light does not turn on or blink and I can't hear the hard drive spinning. The fan occasionally goes on and off, like usual. I don't think there is a problem with the power because the power light goes on and I can also charge my ipod through the USB connection. Before all of this happened, I was just using my laptop like normal (I haven't installed anything new or added anything to the laptop for months) and then my laptop just turned off by itself and started to reboot. However, it would never fully reboot; it would just keep turning itself off, then start rebooting again, then turn itself off and start rebooting again. When it was doing this, it never rebooted to a point where I could see anything on the screen, like the Windows XP logo or the Compaq logo. A couple days before this incident, I heard a single beep from my laptop as it was booting up. I'm not sure if this is related, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your Usb port works, then the mobo is working, so possible graphics problem. Try booting up in safe mode(normally pressing F8) on boot up then highlight 'start windows in safe mode', to see if Windows will load with only minimal drivers, if so restart again, pressing F8 again, but this time highlight 'start windows with last known good configuration' Doing any of these 2 things can be done in any order, either last known good config first or safe mode.

If you can get to your desktop, you can try using system restore(start> programmes> accesories> system tools> system restore)and try restoring back to before the problem started.

You will not loose any saved documents.

Hi, I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Laptop. I have a serious problem with the screen. Every time it boots up the screen stays black, but I can hear it booting up. Anybody here any idea what the problem is?...

Look closely, you should be able to see the Windows desktop.
The fluorescent backlight is not lit up.
The lamp may be blown (not likely) or the inverter cable connector is loose.
Power OFF the laptop and remove the battery & power supply.
Remove the keyboard bezel.
Follow the cable from the screen to the motherboard. Re-seat the connector.
Assemble & power up.

Dell D600 Battery Causes Screen to go Black

Laptop batteries normally just last for a few years, depending on usage. If your battery is almost done, it may report a 'full' status, but just have the capacity to feed your laptop for a few minutes.

You may check this by disconnecting current while your laptop is started up. If low battery capacity is the cause, the same will happen within a few minutes.

Laptops normally go in standby on low battery, to avoid data loss.
