Question about Compaq Presario 2140US Notebook
I have been unable to boot up my laptop. When I turn it on, the screen is black (it looks like it's off, not like a "lit up" black) and the hard drive light does not turn on or blink and I can't hear the hard drive spinning. The fan occasionally goes on and off, like usual. I don't think there is a problem with the power because the power light goes on and I can also charge my ipod through the USB connection. Before all of this happened, I was just using my laptop like normal (I haven't installed anything new or added anything to the laptop for months) and then my laptop just turned off by itself and started to reboot. However, it would never fully reboot; it would just keep turning itself off, then start rebooting again, then turn itself off and start rebooting again. When it was doing this, it never rebooted to a point where I could see anything on the screen, like the Windows XP logo or the Compaq logo. A couple days before this incident, I heard a single beep from my laptop as it was booting up. I'm not sure if this is related, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If your Usb port works, then the mobo is working, so possible graphics problem. Try booting up in safe mode(normally pressing F8) on boot up then highlight 'start windows in safe mode', to see if Windows will load with only minimal drivers, if so restart again, pressing F8 again, but this time highlight 'start windows with last known good configuration' Doing any of these 2 things can be done in any order, either last known good config first or safe mode.
