Question about Sony KP-51WS520 51" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Sony KP-51WS520 I have a Sony that was mfg. in March of 2005. The first sign of a problem was that the screen turned red. I turned the channel and the tv made a crackling sound and the screen turned green, then no picture and the power light blinks. When the tv is turned off then back on, the green screen appears briefly then blacks out and flashing power light. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help. I really think a tv should last longer than 3 years. If this holds true I will not be investing in a Sony!

It is likely one of two things. Either one or more of the video drive IC's had failed, OR one or more of the CRT's (picture tubes) has filed. From personal experience with this model, I hate to say this but I see more picture tubes failing than drive IC's. In fact, if a picture shorts internally, it can also take out or blow up a drive IC. Unfortunately, with the costs involved, you're probably at the point where you have to decide whether to drop a bundle on this TV or invest in a new one. I would lean towards a new TV, because of the improvements in technology that have occurred and the possibility for fure failures with your current set.

It would be wrong to tag Sony for the failure, There are many reasons why picture tubes fail, one of which is if the TV is moved, it can jar the oxidized fragments that build up in the tube and cause and internal short. As a person who works on Sony TV's every day, I can guarantee that they have the best customer support and the best engineered TV's out there. You just happened to have issues with yours. Heck, it may even be worth it to you to have the TV evaluated to confirm a diagnosis. With me diagnosing the TV by internet I could be worng. An onsite diagnosis from my company would be $100 and I wouldn't expect to pay more than that for a good tech to tell you what's wrong. It's for you to decide, I'm just providing my best guess via internet as to what is wrong. If it is the picture tubes, it's time to look for a new TV.

KP-51WS520 wont turn on - standby & timer lights on constantlly

You need to check supply volts on main micro IC702 on main board of Sony KP-51WS520 TV.
If you have experience of big TV repair then I would recommend to get service manual of TV from any online store and check above said IC supply volts. TV must give error by blinking light in case any problem in drive circuits and if main micro fried, no error signal will be there.

When you look into the back of the set its the large board on the left hand side that lays flat. It has the large Flyback transformer with the large red wire coming out of the top.

My SONY TV (KP-51WS520) will not turn on...

a Diode allows electricity to flow in one direction and blocks it in the other direction. So when its open means its burnt out and nothing can pass through in any direction. they will need to be replaced.
