Can lexmark x4650 be set to recognize fax?

For more details on how to setup your Lexmark X4650 printer for faxing, please refer to the User's Guide found on the Lexmark website.
Additional info:If you have an answering on the same line as your fax:

To make sure the printer picks up incoming faxes, set Auto Answer to On, and then set the printer to pick up after a greater number of rings than the answering machine. For example, if the answering machine picks up calls after four rings, then set the printer to pick up after six rings. This way, the answering machine picks up calls first and your voice calls are received. If the call is a fax, then the printer detects the fax signal on the line and takes over the call.

If you have a voicemail feature associated in the same line as your fax:

Voice mail and fax can share the same telephone line if you subscribe to a distinctive ring service offered by your telephone company. This feature allows you to have multiple telephone numbers on one telephone line. Each telephone number has a designated ring pattern (single ring, double ring, triple ring, or double and triple ring). The different ring patterns let you know which telephone number was dialed, and which device you should use to answer the call.

If you do not have distinctive ring service, then set the printer to receive faxes manually (Auto Answer Off). This setting lets you receive both voice calls and fax calls, but works best if you use voice mail more often. You need to turn off voice mail whenever you are expecting a fax.

Here's the link to download the Lexmark X4270 User's Guide: http://bit.ly/cNbUKo. If you prefer to have the printer pick up faxes automatically, I suggest you configure the printer to pickup after the 2nd or 3rd ring before your voicemail picks it up. On the User's Guide, go to Faxing, Receiving a Fax for the instructions. For more info about the printer, go through the User's Guide. Hope this helps.

Can't receive faxes

Hello. Make sure you're plugging the printer to the correct phone jack in the wall. If you're using a splitter, bypass it. Check the settings in the printer. Make sure you assigned the correct Fax number in it and place your Fax name as well. If you're sharing your home phone line with the fax and you have an answering machine, set it to answer first and the Lexmark fax later with a minimum of 2-ring gap. If you have a voicemail, turn it off since it will a conflict with the fax or avail a distinctive ring feature from your phone company so it can work with the fax. Hope this helps.

How to set fax machine so it can accept after 2 rings?

Distinctive Ring basicsDistinctive Ring service is an optional service available from many telephone companies. The Distinctive Ring service permits you to assign more than one telephone number to the same telephone line. Distinctive Ring allows you to use a single phone line for both voice and fax calls. You can assign a unique phone number and ring pattern for incoming fax calls. When a fax comes in, each telephone number makes a distinctive ringing sound, such as a single ring, double ring, or triple ring.
NOTE: The Distinctive Ring Service is the name HP and others use to describe this feature. Distinctive Ring is also known as:
  • Call Sign
  • Custom Ring
  • Ident-a-Call
  • Ident-a-Ring
  • Ident-a-Ring
  • Multi Ring
  • Personalized Ringing
  • Ringmaster
  • Smart Ring
  • Teen-Ring
The Distinctive Ring Service allows the HP product to work similarly to a dedicated fax line. If you connect an HP fax product and a telephone to one telephone line, you can assign one telephone number for fax calls and another for voice calls.
NOTE: You cannot send or receive faxes when the phone line is in use. Even if the HP fax product has a separate telephone number, it is still sharing the same phone line. Set the Distinctive Ring Service Using the menus on the product control panel, follow these steps to set a distinctive ring pattern. Step one: Turn on Auto Answer Turn on Auto Answer by pressing the Auto Answer button on the control panel. The button light indicates when Auto Answer is on.If the button light is already on, you do not need to press the button. 3. Press the Right Arrow button (c01185072.jpg ) to select Distinctive Ring , and then press the OK button.
  4. Press the Right Arrow button (c01185072.jpg ) to select one of the following options:
    • All Rings

    • Double Rings
    • Triple Rings

It will only automatically pick up the line when set to "fax". You need to subscribe to a "distinctive" ring (which is a double ring) service through your telephone company and set the rings to answer appropriately so as to not conflict with your voicemail

Fax answers on phone calls.

Hello There. Most household all in one units cannot operate on the ring characteristcs that you are describing.

They simply operate on the number of rings before automatic pickup to the fax machine. Therefore, you will need to just change the number of rings before the fax machine picks up. In this case however, you will not be able to use voicemail, since one or the other will will pickup.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01102249.pdf
Page 63 and 64 (in PDF) or page 62 and 63 (hardcopy manual) explain the process.

Ignore the information about setting higher then voicemail. That information is typically only valid if you have the old voicemail devices in your home. Most people now adays get a voicemail service added to your telephone service, in which case you cannot control the voicemail as easily.

So again, in other words you will be sacrificing your voicemail for your fax machine. Only other way around it is to get a dedicated fax line to seperate the two numbers.

Incoming fax vs voice

Contact your telephone provider and see if they can offer you a second number for the line and "destinctive ring".
If your fax unit supports this feature, the fax number can do a double-ring where the normal number does a normal ring. The fax unit would then pick up double-ring calls.

I can send faxes, but cannot receive faxes.

Thank you for specifing your connection>

When you have a shared fax line it is import to have a Distinctive Ring Pattern which will differenciate the type of ring patter to recieve voice calls and Fax message.
All You need to do is get a distinctive ring pattern from your telephone service provider (AT&T) and setup your fax machine as per the ring pattern provided by your service provider.

All you need to do is set your rings to answer in youe phone to Rings 4 in your Phone.

Then in the All-In-One Go to menu / Setup> Press the right arrow key and locate basic fax setup> Press Ok and set the Ring Pattern to Number 5 or 6> Press Ok and cancell to come to the main menu
Then in the All-In-One Go to menu / Setup> Press the right arrow key and locate Advance Fax Setup> Locate Distinctive ring pattern and set it to the ring pattern which your Telephone service provider has alloted i.e Single Ring, Double Ring or or Triple Ring (Whichever is applicable)> Nd press Ok and cancell to come to the main menu.

Then you will be able to receive fax message voice cals and voicemail without any interuption.

Good Luck
