Whirlpool gold dishwasher gets stuck at 53 minutes left for an hour

My 4 or 5 year old whirlpool gold dishwasher gets stuck at 53 minutes every time and the "sensing" light is on.. It runs continuously, but it stays on 53 minutes remaining for over an hour.

Thanks;

Mine has no timer but says washing, sensing and never seems to change cycles.
It sure seems to be getting hot enough when I open it my glasses fog up and the heat coming out about knocks me down.
any certain temp i could check the water at the bottom for maybe?

Try "resetting" the control board by running the diagnostic cycle. The cycle completes in 15 minutes.
The details are in the service manual. The manual can be found hidden behind the tow plate (at the very bottom front of the washer).
The diagnostic cycle may tell you the problem. It also helps clear up some of the software gltiches.
It is easy to run the diagnostic cycle.
Just the buttons in the following sequence. The sequence should be complete within 6 sec.
heated dry -> Normal -> heated dry -> Normal
This will trigger diagnostic cycle of 19 intervals. Pay special attention to the intervals 18, 17, 9, 6, 4.
Interval 18 - displays your controller module number (should be letter 'd' followed by number 0 or 1 or 2 or something. Note that down for future reference.
Interval 17 displays 'software generation number' Note that down for future reference.
Then wait until you reach interval 9.  --- clean LED turns on - then an open or shorted thermister is detected.
-- Sanitized LED turns on - then the washer detected greater than 100 deg F temperature
Interval 7
-- Soaking/sensing LED should NOT come on (unless food soil is present).
Interval 4 -- Soaking/sensing LED should come on

Let the cycle complete and then try running the normal wash. Hopefully the possible glitches are cleared by now and you should have no problem.
If this doesn't work, time to call the expert tech.

    Hi All,

Since I posted the last solution, I found more info on this topic.

If your dishwasher is stuck at 53 min or 40+ min, it means that it is not getting at least 140 degF water. There can be several reasons and tech has to figure it out.

However before you call the tech, do the following.

    1. Run the hotwater in the kitchen sink as this the nearest hot water supply point.

    2. After 5-8 minutes, fill up a glass and dip a kitchen thermometer in it.

    3. The ideal temperature is 145-160 degF

    4. However many homes have their hotwater setting that results in max temperature that is closer to 120 degF.

And that's where the problem is. This DW is designed to use 140 degF water to ensure the dishes are free of germs.

The internal heater for the dishwasher isn't strong enough to add 20+ degF.

If and when you do change the setting on your water heater, make sure to run the hot water in the kitchen sink for 5 min before starting the dishwasher. That will ensure that DW is getting the 140 degF from the get go.

Caution! In the household with small children, 140+ degF can result in scalding, so make sure to ask your kids to be carfull when they are using hotwater.

There are many places and parts for dirt to remain after washing. Clean all parts as per manual. Spray inside with vinegar and lemon juice, place tablespoon of bi-carb soda in dispenser and put through cycle without dishes

My Whirlpool dishwasher is stuck on the clean cycle?

If it continues to run without any alarms or flashing light, I would assume the heater is packed up. It is looking for the water to reach the correct wash temperature.

Try to run on the cold water cycles and see if there is any difference.

Make sure the water sprayers are not clogged. It may just be a good idea to get new sprayers and they are easy to install.

My 6 year old Whirlpool dishwasher is loud

This is a bad wash pump. Looking at about $175 for just the sump assembly. You could do it yourself, but unit would need to be uninstalled.

HI, this is a control fault and you can confirm failure by shutting off the breaker switch or unplugging for 5 minutes. if the unit continues to malfunction after the 5 minute reset, you will need to replace the electronic control board.

Electronic Control board part number----8534866
