Question about Linksys WRT300N Wireless Router

1 Answer

Wireless Connection limited range and intermittent

Hi,

I have a Linksys WRT300N Router which has worked well throughout my house for months. For some reason, in the last week, I am having trouble getting a consistent wirless connection on my remote laptop. I have tried to connect using different laptops and I sometimes get connected, then disconnected...and the signal is not as strong as it used to be. I have the same problem using other laptops, so I doubt my laptop is the problem.

Any suggesttions? And please respond in English. Even though I can follow directions well, I have trouble when you use terminology that is not familiar to lay people. Thanks!

1. Access the router's setup page then go to wireless tab and change the current wireless channel to a different one.
2. You may also upgrade the firmware of your router.

Intermittent/non-existant connection with LinkSys WRT54G router

I would get a Range Expander... it sounds like you are having problems recieving a constant signal. When you do get the range expander plug the Range Expander halfway between you upstairs computers and your downstairs where your router is at. I hope this helps!!

WRT300N wont connect wireless

Intermittent Connectivity:
NOTE: Before following the steps in this article, check if your wireless computers have stable connection when connected to other wireless networks (hotspots).
This article assumes that all wireless computers are experiencing intermittent wireless connection with the Linksys router.
Frequent wireless disconnection can be caused by different factors such as:
  1. Wireless interference within the network.
  2. Wireless settings of the Linksys router are still set to default.
  3. Firmware is corrupted.
Reducing Wireless Interference
If you are experiencing frequent disconnection from the wireless network, it helps if you check the following factors, all of which can greatly affect your wireless signals:
your cordless telephone system (or even your neighbors’), or other nearby equipment. Try to change your router’s channel to 1 or 11 (the default channel is 6) and restart the wireless computers.
Physical obstructions: Your router or wireless computers may be losing connectivity because of physical obstacles such as walls and floors. Try to move the equipment to different locations to find a better link.

Placement of the router: Linksys suggests that you place your router as high off the ground as possible. When placing the router in a high location, leave a distance of two feet between the router antenna tips, ceiling, and wall. If your signal passes through multiple floors, place the router on the upper-most floor and high up in the room.
  • Surroundings: Keep the router away from large metal objects, bodies of water (fish tanks, bathrooms), and any electrical equipment including television sets, microwaves, radios, etc.
Customizing Wireless Settings of the Router
Having default wireless settings on the Linksys router may cause conflict with other Linksys routers within your network range. Linksys suggests changing the SSID (network name) and the Wireless Channel of your router. Also, if it is possible, enable the Wireless Security of your router.
To change the router’s SSID or the wireless network’s name, click here.
To change the router’s channel, click here.
To enable the wireless security on the router, click here.
NOTE: If the wireless connection remains unstable after performing the steps above, upgrade the router’s firmware. For instructions, click here

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

How to put to secure my linksys wrt300n router?

First, you'll need to log into the Router, do this with a cable.
Second, you will need to enable WPA, if that doesn't work, use WEP. This is the support page for your Router:
http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WRT300N

Read the FAQ related to your internet connection type, read through it all. It will have links to setting up the wireless connection and wireless encryption.

This link is probably what you will eventually find yourself, but the above link starts you from the beginning of the process just in case something is not setup right.

You'll need to pick a long hard to guess password, use letters and numbers. Oh, and you'll also need to choose a password for the login of the Router itself. Once you choose your passwords, write them down and keep them with your router. Normally I tape the passwords to my Router. Just be sure not to cover any vent holes.

Need the driver for Linksys WRT300N V1 ... can't find the CD

Hi,

The LINKSYS WRT300N is a standalone device, there are no software/driver needed on your PC for the router to work. However, there is an easy Setup Wizard that is in the CD that normally comes with the unit.

Unfortunately, Linksys did not make the specific Setup Wizard (Version 1.3) for the WRT300N available online. However, if you care to try the Setup Wizard for a WRT54GC, it may downloaded from the LINKSYS ftp site here. I used to have a WRT54G and I did make use of the Setup Wizard for that model. I upgraded to WRT300N. The setup wizard for the old WRT54G worked likewise on the new WRT300N.

Alternately, the WRT300N can still be configured without the CD or the Setup Wizard by logging into the Configuration Page (192.168.1.1). Remember to use LAN interface when setting the router (as shown in the connection diagram) and set your PC to an IP Address of 192.168.1.2, Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0; Follow on screen instructions and enter settings/configurations manually.

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information. Additionally, if you still prefer to have a copy of the original WRT300N Setup Wizard, pls include your email address that I may send it to you as an attachment.

Good luck and kind regards.
