Question about Sony Handycam DCR-HC14E Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Sony DCR-TRV30 Error Code 31:23

Tried every suggested solution to no avail. Can't find a specific explanation for the "self repair" code!
(Should I considering a site I located that provides a drive pin repair tutorial w/ photos.)

I got the TRV30 on ebay for about $300 when my previous one developed the same problem! It lasted me 1-1/2 year. I assume the repair will cost about the same. What will it take to fix the reel problem myself. I have done some servicing on my electronics.

Any idea of the cost for the gooseneck gear and time to get it shipped? What's the frequencies of units getting their reels bent when loading? what's an example of a tape misload? Your answers will be greatly appreciated as I need to determine how this problem seem to be re-occuring in my middle school classes. I train my students in handling production gear and hope to stymie this problem!

    Thanks

I'm not familiar with your rating system. You have been very helpful!

If "FixYa!" is the level I should have selected --- consider it done!

...But I did have a few more Qs.

  • act66 Nov 11, 2008

If there were a higher level than "Fixya" I would clic it!

Thanks for the depth of the help you provided me. I must admit I expected less since all my earlier searches yielded few results! It now seems clear that my students must have damaged the units by improperly loading the cassettes.

    Best wishes.

I wouldn't waste my money on the pay site. The code you are seeing (C31:23) is a reel error, caused either by the reels not turing or the sensors for the reels malfunctioning. The mechanism on this unit os not "self repairable" . Save your money and find a good technician to repair the unit for you.

First, you have to disassemble the camcorder to get to the mechanism. Then once you get the mechanism separated from the rest of the unit, the cassette basket or tape loading mech has to be removed. Once you remove that, there is a dress panel with the tape sense LED attached that will have to be reomoved. Behind the dress panel is a swing gear that drives the reels. The swing gear depends on friction from a clutch behind the gear (but it's part of the gear). the reason it stops working is that the clutch wears out so the gear won't swing and engage the reels (Sony calls it a "gooseneck gear" p/n X-3950-364-1) Replace the gooseneck gear and that SHOULD take care of your problem. Also check to make sure the reelshaven't been bent, this sometimes happens if you "misload" a tape. Be sure to rate this solution. Thanks!

Before I answer your questions may I ask you why this solution was rated as Helpful? I thought I had answered all of your questions.

"Fixya" level is awarded when you feel I have answered your questions accurately. We as experts cannot suggest what level to award, I can only ask if there is something I have not answered or if your needs have not been fulfilled.

OK So I haven't heard back so I'll answer a few of your questions, but there is something you should understand. The experts on this site depend on their ratings to be able to continue providing answers to users. Questions like the one you asked require we research the information and contribute our time and experience in providing an answer. So it is somewhat disappointing to spend the time answering a question and receive a poor or so-so rating. In your case I don't think it was intentional. the rating system is ambiguous at best. But now you know.

First thing I would do is download this manual:
    http://reglage.camescope.free.fr/broadca...

This is the technical manual for servicing the mechanism used in your camcorder. It looks like the going rate for the gooseneck gear is around $30, delivery time would depend on who you order it from.
Misloading and bent reels usually results from: inserting a tape upside down and trying to force the door, inserting the tape wrong way and trying to force the door, partially inserting the tape and trying to close the door,

The best way to avoid having to replace the gooseneck gear so often is to buy a miniDV rewinder so you're not using the camcorder mech so much. Now if all that information plus the previous information and the link to a mechanism manual don't rate a Fixya, I don't know what does.

The C31 indicates that there is a motor movement problem. I don't have the manual handy at the moment, but the :23 will indicate which movement is having the problem. This is not typically a DIY repair. I woul d strongly suggest that you check the fixed repair cost from a Sony authorized service center. This will not only repair the unit, but also reset it back to factory specifications.

I'll look up the error code tonight and try to update this.

This small back-up battery on my Sony is under the main big power battery, it is like a large screw under the main power pack, I just turn that screw and the little round lid comes off to get to the little silver flat back-up one.
They are readily available from most good camera shops like Jesops for around £12 to £15 each.

I have a Sony DCR-TRV30 and it just gave me a self diagnosing error C:31:23 and I can not clear it even taking out battery and tape and reinserting it does not clear can you tell me what else I can try

Hi,
Error C:31:23 is related to mechanically misalignment of the tape loading path, and it removes when mechanical adjustment performs, a sensor in mechanical section detects mechanical problem and generates the error. This error removes automatically when the problem solve. For mechanical adjustment contact any expert nearby to perform the adjustment.Which is bit technical and can only perform by an expert.
Thanks for using fixya.

Video recording shuts down after 15 seconds

I just looked at my Sony DCR-TRV30. Not the same, but perhaps similar. My camera records lengthy videos on tape and only brief videos on memory stick. I suggest that you stick to tape for video.
Good Luck
