First time visitor. Entered Epson Stylus Photo R285 into search box. As I scrolled down what I presume is the result of my search, there were answers for everything BUT my R285. I use a CISS kit on my...

Welcome to FixYa.

This occurs when the ink pad counter times out and is supposed to be a dealer service to drain the waste reservoir and replace the pad.

The only thing that you can do is try to reset the printer. Please do the following:
  • Turn off the printer by pressing the power button. Check to make sure that the print head is in the default position, to the far right of the device and locked in place.
  • Hold down the paper feed button. Turn on the printer by pressing the power button.
  • Release the paper feed button as the paper feed light starts to flash. Immediately hold down the ink-drops button for 15 seconds.
  • Wait for the printer to complete its test run. Turn off the printer and then turn it back on once more.

Thank you for using Fixya, keep me posted.

Epson R285 need service utility

It sounds a lot like you have managed to reset the printer using the R290 adjustment utility and it now thinks that your printer is an R290 printer.

As a result it's rejecting the yellow cartridge (presumably the first to read empty since you reset the printer) and expects you to provide R290 consumables.

The only fix that I've heard suggested (and I'm still waiting to hear if it worked) if to get someone with a valid R285 to use the same adjustment utility to make a backup of the EEPROM data (nothing else), save this file, send it to you, and then for you to restore that same data to your own printer EEPROM.

As I said, I haven't heard if it works and I could be wrong about the cause but as I provide waste kits myself and have already had quite a few people report a similar issue I suspect I'm about right.

Hope that helps.

Hi my epson r285 with ciss is leaving ink blotches all over my print outs, predominantly black, but less frequent with the other colours. This is only a new printer. Head cleaning, noxzzle cleaning and...

It might be caused by waste ink at bottom plate around head sprayer. For some CISS (bottle) design, ink will flow to head, and then flow to pad, when printer off. So, you must close respiratory hole at bottle when printer is not used. For cleaning, turn off printer (unplug power) when head is not in parking position. Move head to center. Put wet tissue (with cleaner or hot water) at top of pad (at head cleaning mechanics). Move head to parking position. So bottom plate contact with tissue. Wait for 10 minutes, repeat 3 times. Check nozzle.

Bit late in replying but this guide for dealing with the R285 has been up for a while now.

It tackles everything from installing a waste ink tank to resetting the waste ink counter.

Wrote the thing myself following quite a bit of interest... Hope it helps.

Ciss for epson r285 printer not reconising new system

Check the carts on the ciss the chip on the front will have the version number in the top left corner the latest version for all new R285 is I believe V5.0 if you have a version earlier than this you may have probs I believe its possible with a little care to buy some disposable compat carts and remove the chips and put them on your ciss carts this should solve the problem....Tel.
