Model 50001 fat ps2 cleaned the lens adjusted the arm...

Hi I had this thing apart about a week ago and it seemed to do well to do it but now it refuses to do anything I want it to do. PSone games are a no go same with audio cds no go. I found if I cleaned under the lens I clean the fixed lens too. and now I don't see my lens moving up and down the track like it should anymore. Please help me figure out what I did wrong? I also have a slim PS2 scph 70011 cleaned its laser but seemed no good. Thanks

The previous answer mentioned another potential reason for the laser not tracking along the discs. The pin that sits in the groove on the silver drive shaft does not engage.  In other words, the drive shaft rotates as necessary, but the lens will not move back and forth to read the disc.

Otherwise, the lens reads the disc but freezes after the PS logo screen.

If your lens is not moving up and down the track at all even in bootup then sounds like your motor is fried. What i'm referring to is this:

model 50001 fat ps2 cleaned the lens adjusted the - 32dabe5.jpg

You can find similar parts like this .::HERE::.

To verify this, open your dvdrom tray. Power off the PS2 via the swtich on the back of the PS2 (thus leaving the dvdrom tray open) Tare down your PS2 and remove the four screws on the top of your DVD-ROM unit (if this is a fat model, if it's a slimline model you'll have to remove that whole platic piece covering the unit itself) You may have to do some research on this next part (via google) but remove your DVD-ROM tray so you can see the guts of the DVD-ROM. Then power on your PS2. And ask yourself the following questions as you observe.

1.) Does the lens move at all even right after bootup?

2.) Is the siver bar part of the motor(pictured above) turning at all to make it move?

If it doesn't turn at all then there is your problem. If it does turn, and the lens doesn't move at all then the ribbon cable that connects the lens to the board maybe damaged or the lens itself is damaged.

Hope that helps

If the bar is turning and the lens is not moving (due to the nature of how this assembly works you should never encounter this) first check to make sure that the screw that sets into the grove of the bar is actually in the grove of the bar. Not always but sometimes this screw gets loose and doesn't sit in it's groove anymore. What I'm trying to say is that bar on the motor should not turn period if the eye is not moving. But it is also something to check to make sure the pin that rests in the bar's groove, is in fact sitting where it should. When the bar turns you'll notice the groove winds down the bar. This is what is allowing the laser eye to move up and down the track. So it's worth looking into as well.

Every game i put in i get a disc read error

ps2's are know for this.(slim model) i too had this problem. i got angry and "lightly" tossed it on the carpeted ground a few times. and it worked, but no rumbling effect, or vibrations anymore. if you are desperate, i would suggest letting it drop from 1-2 feet off of the ground like 12 times. it seems to sometimes re-align things. but be aware that you may break it in the process. sorry i hope this is usefull to you!

DISC READ ERROR

try cleaning the lens with a Q-tip and a little bit of rubbing alcohol (not dripping). lightly touch the Q-tip to the lens and TWIRL it. use the other end of the Q-tip to dry it. or get a laser lens cleaner, specifically designed for video game systems. for a fat PS2 go here and go to the very end. www.powerfulguides.com/ps2 hope this helps :D

PS2 won't read disk sometimes

I've helped someone else with a similar problem here: http://www.fixya.com/support/t1300166-playstation_2_console_keeps_freezing

It's not enough to use a disk to clean the laser lens. You have to take the PS2 apart and clean the lens manually. Nicotine, Incense, diffusers, and other smokes and just time itself clouds the lens. Not only that but the part that the disk sits and spins on needs to be cleaned over time as well to assure the disk is in proper alignment and Is not just kinda spinning on the spindle.

In that link i posted above you be led to directions on how to take apart your PS2 and what parts to clean. The instructions I have posted in that tutorial is for the (FAT) PS2 model not SLIMLINE. If you have a slimline model you don't have to take apart anything just open your cover and clean the parts in the video.

Hope that helps,

PS2 Modded Trouble Reading DVDr's

Your DVD potentiometer pot on the back of the PS2 laser lens needs to be readjusted. Some people will try to tell you it's out of alignment but if that was the case it would not read CD's. Some people will try to tell you the laser lens is bad. If that was the case it would not read CD's. On the back of the laser lens are two potentiometer pots. In english? Two lil screws that are turnable. One controls the power of the DVD laser one controls the power of the CD laser.

http://www.cyber-mag.com/station/laserV9.htm

That link will give you pretty lil pictures of what i'm talking about :)

In a nut shell the story goes like this folks. If your PS2 won't read certain game DVD's that are of a certain color or if it all of a sudden mysteriously fails to read games it once read but will play cd's just fine, the voltage of the laser for DVD's is not set correctly. (this does needs manual tweeking from time to time if you take your ps2 and move it around alot or if you take it over to friends houses etc etc. Basicly alot of movment in general can take this out of alignment. Even keeping the PS2 on it's side could theoreticly (just my opinion) based on gravitational pull, unbalance the potentiometer.

RESOLUTION:

Step 1 identify your PS2 version:

Version 1 - SCPH-30001, 10 screws on bottom of case, serial no. starts with "U1"
Version 2 - SCPH-30001, 10 screws on bottom of case, serial no. starts with "U0"
Version 3 - SCPH-30001, 10 screws on bottom of case, serial no. starts with "U2"
Version 4 - SCPH-30000, 30001, 35001, 30002, 35002, 30003, 35003, 30004, or 35004, 8 screws on bottom of case

NOTE: Version 4 has 2 varieties of motherboard: Gap/No Gap, the difference between v4 "Gap" and v4 "No Gap" is the "Gap" is there's a spot in the center of bios chip where each side lacks solder points.

Version 5 - SCPH-30000R, 30001R, 30002R, 30003R, 30004R, or 30006R. Also, some SCPH-30000, 30001, 30002, 30003, and 30004 models have a V5/V6

NOTE: Version 5 & 6 - the difference between these two versions is one of the connectors in the corner.

Version 7 - SCPH-39000, 39001, 39002, 39003, 39004, 39008 or 37000
Version 8 - Only in Japanese consoles. SCPH-39000, or, SCPH-39006 (GH-022 BIOS 090)
Version 9 - if you have SCPH-50000, 50001, 50002, 50003, 50004, 50006, or 50007 you have a v9 or v10 board.
Version 10 - SCPH-5000x, with date code "3D" to the right and below the serial number on the back of the console. (GH-026 board)

NOTE: To know if its a v9/v10 start up PS2 with no game in it ,press triangle and check dvd driver version dvd ver 3.00 = v9 & dvd ver 3.02 = v10.

If your model # is SCPH-50000, 50001, 50002, 50003 or 50004 AND if you can find a small ''a'' under the SCPH number or have DATECODE "3C" you have a V9 PS2 main board. (GH-026 board).

If your model # is SCPH-50000, 50001, 50002, 50003 or 50004 AND if you can find DATE CODE "3D" as shown below, you have a V10 PS2 main board. (GH-026 board).

Version 12 - The new slimline PS2 consoles are referred to as PSTwo here, but elsewhere they are also known as "v12" units... their numbers are SCPH-70011/SCPH-70012, and also SCPH-70004 CB (Belgium).

Step 2 use either google or the link above. If you're using google your keyword search will be something like "ps2 v12 laser lens adjustment" *replace v12 with your ps2 model.

In either case navigate to the site and follow instructions to set the pots back to their factory default settings.

My PS2 will not read PS1 games, even though it's supposed to. What should I do to make it work again?

this is a common problem with the origional realease of the ps2 the fat models, not the slim (but can happen in slims) it is either a lens adjustment problem or lens needs to be cleaned, google adjusting ps2 laser lens and you will find the solution, (this does involve taking the case apart so if it is under warrenty that is the way to go)

PS2 Cleaning

Hi kakashi654 Once you have access to the lens. If it is a Old version FAT PS2, use Q-tip and Rubbing alcohol. If it is the Slim or PSP models, use Windex with Qtip. Dry the lens with a dry Qtio Use a magnifying glass and light to be sure you have the lens clean.
