200 Harley 1200 Sportster, Shuts off when at idle at stoplight / stopsign, etc.

This Harley runs great when wide open on the road, but lately motor just shuts off when I downshift into a stop and am sitting at idle. Have replaced plugs, plug wires, key switch, checked wiring and not finding any problems. Seems to be getting good fuel flow when under throttle, but when coming to a stop it will just shut completely down. To beat all this is an intermittent problem...does not always do it. Release and reapply clutch and restart, give some throttle and will go down the road fine. I am thinking fuel filter....have a slight miss in 2nd, 3rd gear at low rpm but gets on it at full throttle. Using Exxon premium fuel, recent oil change clean filters....Help!

Recently purchased a sportster 1200 xl low rider 06 plate. Which is great in every way apart from town use, I find that once the engine has got warm I am having to continually blip the throttle to stop it...


Regrettably, it is a "norm" for an H-D Sportster but it's fixable. The engine is jetted very lean in order to meet EPA emission standards. The lean mixture is what causes the spitting back through the carburetor and poor idle qualities of the engine. You can improve the low speed and idling characteristics of your engine by going up one size on the low speed jet and readjusting the idle mixture. If you can do this work yourself, let me know and I'll give you the instructions on how to do it. If not, take your bike to a performance oriented shop and talk to them about it. If they have a dynometer and an exhaust gas analyzer, they can fine tune your bike to where it runs like it should.

2005 1200 sportster bogs when idling


It could be any number of things but I would tend to think that it's something to do with the carburetor. It could be something as simple as it's idled too low. The idle speed should be about a thousand RPMs or so.

Your bike also came from the factory jetted extremely lean. A "jet kit' may help the problem in that it will richen the mixture up just a bit making the transition from the idle circuit to the midrange circuit smoother.

Next, you may have a problem with the accelerator pump on your carb. If the pump is not working correctly. Remove the air filter cover and element so that you can see into the carb. With the engine NOT running, crank the throttle to wide open position while looking into the carb. You should see a stream of fuel being squirted into the carb out of a brass nozzle in the throat of the carb. If you don't see this, you need to have the carb serviced.

That's a strange one. The only things I can think of suggesting are:
  • Clogged gas cap vent. The next time is starts running poorly, remove the gas cap briefly and see if things improve. If so, then the cap is not venting as it should.
  • Moisture trapped in float bowl. Drain the contents on the carburetor float bowl into a clean container and check for dirt, rust, water, or anything else that doesn't belong there.
  • Dirty fuel filter. If there is one, replace it.
  • Air leak between carb and engine. Check tightness of clamps and manifolds for cracking. WD-40 sprayed around those areas with the engine idling will help detect any leaks.
That's all I can think of. Please let me know if any of my suggestions fixed it.

No sweat. Screw the idle mixture screw in until it "bottoms out". Do not tighten or you will damage the screw. Back the idle mixture screw out about three turns. Install carburator and check for proper operation.
When you get the bike running, allow it to warm up and then adjust the mixture for highest smoothest idle. Set idle speed to about 1000 rpm with the throttle stop screw.

Speedo, turn signals, brake lights, horn stopped working. All else is fine.


Gap your plugs to 38 thou. Check all your bulbs (one burned out will affect the rest) Take a look at all your fuses and make sure they are all ok. Otherwise you are probably looking at a wiring short which will require trouble shooting of the elctrical system. Buy your self a service manual for your bike, this will help you a lot.
